About the job

In this position, you will:

  • Gain the experience necessary for your Professional Engineering accreditation.

  • Progress in your career while taking on increasingly challenging projects.

  • Gain experience related to the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of provincial highways, including standards development, materials research and testing, traffic management, capital program delivery, and asset management for transportation infrastructure.

NOTE:

  • This position requires regular independent business travel within a region, to various job sites, and potentially across the province for professional development, meetings and training.
  • Work-related travel expenses, and if required, assignment specific relocation costs and temporary living expenditures will be covered by the Ministry of Transportation for the duration of the rotational assignment and in accordance with the Ontario Public Service's Travel, Meal and Hospitality Expenses Directive.

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirements

  • You must have completed a minimum of a four-year electrical engineering or related degree by Spring of 2026. This degree will have provided you with knowledge in in geotechnical, traffic management, transportation, structural, construction and/or materials specialties to qualify for the technical and educational requirements for professional licensing with Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO).
  • You must have graduated, or met the requirements to graduate, from a relevant (undergraduate or graduate engineering program) between May 2024 and Spring 2026.
  • You must possess a valid driver's License, or equivalent as recognized by the Province of Ontario.

Analytical, Problem-Solving Skills and Judgement:

  • You are able to interpret data from a variety of sources, apply design, and resolve problems that arise during construction.
  • You are able to contribute to the development of innovative design, construction staging and foresee adverse impacts of designs.
  • You are able to analyze relationships among several parts of a problem or situation and make causal links.
  • You are able to draw on your own experience, knowledge, and expertise to provide the best response in a critical or urgent situation.

Communication Skills:

  • You have oral communication and active listening skills to explain complex policies, procedures and techniques, to help ensure information is understood.
  • You have written communication skills to accurately document information and prepare reports.
  • You have written and oral communication skills to prepare and present presentation material related to the engineering aspects of a project.

Relationship Management Skills:

  • You are able to develop and maintain harmonious relationships, with diverse internal and external clients and respond in an appropriate and professional manner.
  • You are able to establish mutual trust and credibility with colleagues and team members.
  • You are able to support team successes and work to resolve issues or concerns by promoting the expression of diverse points of view.

Organizational Skills:

  • You can set work priorities and allocate your own time and that of other resources to achieve project objectives.
  • You are able to monitor progress towards deliverables and make specific changes in own work processes to meet business objectives and/or improve performance.

Concern for Quality and Standards:

  • You have integrity to ensure your actions are consistent with organizational values, policies and codes of conduct.
  • You are able to monitor and evaluate work quality and processes against policies, standards and regulations.

Technical Knowledge:

  • You have knowledge in electrical infrastructure design, traffic management, intelligent transportation systems, and transportation.
