About the Position:
Walters Engineering delivers safe, economical, and construction-driven structural steel solutions, with a strong focus on execution, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
We’re looking for a Project Engineer with structural steel connection design experience to join our growing team. We are open to candidates ranging from intermediate to senior level, with opportunities to take on increased responsibility based on experience and capability.
You’ll work on complex, real-world steel projects where constructability and execution matter just as much as design — with the opportunity to take ownership of decisions and see your work through to fabrication and erection.
What You’ll Own
You will take ownership of connection design scope on projects, ensuring solutions are not only technically sound, but practical and buildable.
In this role, you will:
-
Lead or contribute to steel connection design, ensuring compliance with codes, contract requirements, and constructability needs.
-
Review drawings/specs and proactively identify gaps, coordinating RFIs to resolve issues early.
-
Collaborate with detailers to ensure designs translate effectively into Tekla models and fabrication-ready details.
-
Troubleshoot real-world challenges during fabrication and erection, ensuring practical, buildable solutions.
-
Balance optimization, schedule, and constructability, adapting your approach based on project needs.
-
Drive continuous improvement through tools, standardization, and design optimization.
For senior candidates, the role offers the opportunity to lead projects end-to-end and shape how connection design is executed within the team, including:
-
Project-level oversight, including stamping and engineering accountability.
-
Mentoring and reviewing work of other engineers.
-
Leading coordination with external connection designers and project stakeholders.
-
Driving design strategy, constructability input, and risk mitigation.
How We Work (What Sets Our Team Apart)
We’re intentional about how we operate. The engineers who thrive here tend to:
-
Own outcomes — dependable in delivering quality work, following through, and keeping others informed.
-
Be service-oriented — supporting detailers, project teams, shops, and clients with a solutions-first mindset.
-
Stay adaptable — adjusting to project demands, balancing speed and optimization, and continuously learning.
-
Communicate clearly and early — surfacing risks, gaps, and impacts before they become issues.
-
Think like builders, not just designers — understanding how decisions affect fabrication and erection.
-
Work efficiently and deliberately — managing priorities well and continuously improving how work gets done.
Work Location:
-
Head Office, Hamilton ON.
Position Requirements:
-
Minimum 3 years of experience in structural steel connection design (hands-on, project-based experience preferred).
-
Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering.
-
P.Eng (or working toward; required for senior roles).
-
Strong understanding of steel fabrication, connections, and erection practices.
-
Tekla Structures experience is a strong asset.
-
Ability to balance technical accuracy with practical, construction-driven solutions.
-
Strong communication skills with a focus on clarity, relevance, and timely updates.
Compensation Package:
- Wage: $40.00-$47.00/Hour.
- Profit Sharing.
- Vacation.
- Paid sick and Bereavement leaves.
- Flexible extended health and dental care packages.
- Employee Assistance Program.
- RRSP Matching.
- Employee Family Scholarship Program.
- Tuition support (Apprentice, Continued Education)
- Values in Action (ViA)- participating in charity events coordinated by employees. As well as team bonding activities.
