Summer Student role under the Canada Summer Jobs Grant

Position Summary

Chrysalis House (CH) is a 25-bed shelter for abused cis women, trans women, non-binary and gender diverse individuals and their children. Under the supervision of the Team Manager and Family Support Counsellors as a member of the Child & Youth team, the Summer Recreation Worker will develop, coordinate and facilitate the children's recreation program.

Position Duties and Responsibilities

  • Creating a monthly calendar of onsite and offsite activities
  • Supervising the children at CH who attend the Summer Recreation Program
  • Maintaining safe and secure environment for children; maintaining cultural diversity and inclusiveness in all programming
  • Attending Child and Youth team meetings
  • Communicating with clients, team mates and supervisors
  • Writing up programming materials and sharing those with clients, team mates and supervisors
  • Participating in multi-disciplinary team meetings and sharing ideas, participating in discussions related to challenges and issues
  • Presenting and facilitating programming either in a group setting or one on one with residents/clients
  • Composing emails and other professional correspondence

Knowledge, Experience & Skills

  • Must be between the ages of 15 to 30 and legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • Training in the field of Child & Youth Work will be considered an asset;
  • Experience working with children and youth including those from diverse communities and of diverse abilities;
  • Knowledge of violence against women and children who witness abuse issues;
  • Child & Youth intervention skills, behaviour management and crisis intervention would be assets;
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, problem-solving and organizational skills;
  • Excellent computer and administrative skills;
  • Experience with and sensitivity to diverse community groups;
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English, spoken and written; French and/or other languages are an asset;
  • Available to work flexible hours.

Salary/Hours of Work

  • 35 hours/week - ability to work flexible hours is required
  • $17.60/hour (plus 4% vacation pay)
