Job Description:

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Service Responsibilities:

  • To complete admissions of Clients to, and discharges from the Hostel
  • To take basic information for intake, orientate new clients to rules, regulations, schedules as well as available services.
  • To complete triage for new clients or those who have not been triaged in the last (3) months.
  • To perform all clerical duties, make logbook entries, and fill in all required forms.
  • To sort and process mail daily, stamp and place mail in mailboxes, register cheques in cheque binder, distribute mail, and have clients sign for cheques, and check ID before giving out the mail.
  • To assist with the supervision of clients.
  • To provide support, assistance, and encouragement to clients.
  • To make referrals to counseling, administration, pastoral care, or programming.
  • Bag and tag residents’ belongings when necessary.
  • To do appropriate rounds of the Centre for the 11:00 p.m. and 1:30 a.m. bed checks and register all Beds not used (BNUs).
  • Arrange for wake-up calls for clients who request the same.
  • Complete final rounds of the building to make certain that all dormitory beds have been cleared and the rooms are locked and secured at 8:00 a.m.
  • Do hourly rounds of MMC and sign-off on rounds.
  • Maintain a presence in the Hostel Atrium when assigned and participate in programming with the clients.
  • To monitor the Computer Lab when assigned to do so.

Organizational Responsibilities

  • Attend all authorized seminars, staff meetings, and training sessions as required.
  • Adhere to standards consistent with the values and philosophy of the Salvation Army and the Maxwell Meighen Centre.
  • Read and follow the policy and procedures of the Maxwell Meighen Centre and adhere to the Shelter Standards when dealing with the client, residents, and staff.
  • Make suggestions that will improve efficiency, working conditions, or procedures of the department and the Centre.

  • Work Environment and Safety – Maintain a safe and pleasant workplace by following the safety regulations and actively contributing towards a safer workplace.

CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT:

Governance Boards and Councils: None

Internal:

  • Program Services Manager, Housekeepers, Janitors, Maintenance Workers, Case Management Workers, Housing Workers, Community Follow-Up Workers, Chaplains, Administration and the Management Team, clients/residents.

External:

  • Community agencies.

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:

  • Register cheques in cheque binder and have clients sign for cheques.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Flexibility is required and the schedule may vary according to the requirements of responsibilities.

  • Working environment is in the shelter locations in generally agreeable conditions.

  • The performance of the job requires moderate amounts of keyboarding and performing walkabouts.

  • May interact with clients with erratic/ aggressive behaviors.

  • May deal with angry and/or abusive people.

  • May deal with verbal abuse.

  • The incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor to moderate injury or illnesses due to:

    • Physical attack by others
    • Exposure to infectious diseases
    • Exposure to bodily fluids
    • Sharp objects
  • The incumbent carries a radio while on duty.

Education, experience, Qualifications, certifications, skills:

  • Post-Secondary Diploma in Social Work, Addictions, Counselling, or related field(s).
  • Certification in First Aid/CPR, and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Experience and Knowledge Requirements:

  • Minimum of 2 years related work experience.

Skills and Capabilities:

  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.
  • Second language an asset.
  • Good computer skills with working knowledge of Windows.
  • Good clerical skills.
  • Ability to function as a team member.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry), and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $27.81 to $28.21 with a maximum of $28.61.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
