About Us

Microbiology & Immunology is a vibrant Department of scholarly activity offering a stimulating and dynamic environment attractive to outstanding students and leading researchers. The Department of Microbiology & Immunology is a core department of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and places a special emphasis on biomedical research and teaching with a focus on human disease, infection, and immunity. The mission of Dr. Dekaban’s research is to develop biotherapeutic approaches for the treatment of neurodegenerative disease and acute and chronic viral diseases that can lead to neurodegeneration.

Responsibilities

The Research Technician will perform and record the results of various experiments and techniques and will assist in coordinating the research within the Krembil Alzheimer’s Disease Group and the PRECISE Team between four different laboratories, under the direction of a Principal Investigator. The role will participate in the compilation, analysis and presentation of results for dissemination and will make recommendations for, and assist with determining, the protocols and equipment for use in the conduct of experiments. The role will work in collaboration to support the effective operation of the laboratory, train and oversee students, order supplies, and ensure safety standards are met. The role will support research through assisting with the operation, troubleshooting and servicing of equipment and instrumentation.

Qualifications

Education:

  • 4 year university bachelor's degree in science or medial science

Experience:

  • 4 years' experience working with SARS-CoV2 and/or other viral infections in a CL3 facility including working with viral infection of cells, plaque assays, etc.
  • Experience monitoring and caring for SARS-CoV2 and/or other virus infected animals in CL3 facility including general handling and administering various techniques
  • Advanced experience designing, running and analyzing multi-colour flow cytometric panels on BD and or Cytek analytical flow cytometers
  • Microscopy experience (both light and fluorescence)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Familiarity with methods for research design, implementation, and analysis
  • Ability to operate BD LSRII, FACSAria, LSR II, FACSCanto, the Coulter CytoFLEX and/or the Cytek full spectral Aurora cytometers.
  • Conduct various cell culture techniques (such as isolating and culturing murine bone marrow derived dendritic cells (BMDCs), isolating peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from human, marine and rat blood samples, maintaining established cell lines, transfection, and generating single-cell suspensions from various tissues)
  • Familiarity with techniques for updating, managing and extracting data from a research database
  • Familiarity with preventative maintenance techniques and practices
  • Excellent communication skills with a demonstrated ability to complete detailed analytics and reports
  • Verbal and written communication skills with an ability to document technical information
  • Ability to plan and manage group meetings of various sizes
  • Ability to apply critical thinking to evaluate information and make appropriate decisions or recommendations
  • Attention to detail with an ability to retrieve, analyze and synthesize sizable amounts of data, while ensuring that information is accurate and comprehensive
  • Ability to follow formal processes and protocols with high attention to detail
  • Proven ability to multi-task and prioritize with an eye to consistently producing high quality work and meeting deadlines in a demanding environment
  • Ability to work in a manner that is compliant with confidentiality requirements
  • Computer skills with the ability to learn and use software programs
  • Excellent troubleshooting ability along with hands-on expertise in technical support
  • Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Demonstrated ability take initiative, to work independently and follow through on work assignments
  • Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public
  • Ability to investigate defined issues, solicit input, and suggest remedies and alternative approaches that meet the needs of the situation
  • Ability to identify key results from research and to summarize and draft reports on research findings
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve research/laboratory goals
  • Familiarity with University policies and procedures related to research preferred
