The Role The Shipping & Receiving Supervisor is responsible for the execution and day-to-day management of all inbound and outbound shipping activities, ensuring raw materials, packaging supplies, and finished goods are received, processed, stored, and shipped accurately, safely, and on time. This role supports incoming deliveries, oversees outbound customer shipments, coordinates transportation, prepares shipping documentation, and operates material handling equipment to maintain the efficient flow of materials throughout the facility.
As the leader of the Shipping & Receiving function, this position is expected to establish structure, improve processes, and promote operational discipline across all shipping and receiving activities. Working closely with Production, Procurement, Customer Service, Quality, and Warehouse Operations, the Shipping & Receiving Supervisor plays a key role in maintaining customer service levels, supporting inventory accuracy, and ensuring the department operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company standards.
Main Responsibilities Lead Shipping and Receiving Operations Lead the daily execution of all inbound and outbound shipping and receiving activities. Support the receiving of incoming materials by verifying quantities and documentation against purchase orders and packing slips. Report shortages, damages, and receiving discrepancies to the appropriate departments. Prepare, stage, verify, and load customer shipments to ensure orders are shipped accurately and on time. Operate forklifts and other material handling equipment to safely load, unload, move, and stage materials and finished goods. Establish daily priorities and provide direction to shipping personnel to ensure work is completed safely and efficiently. Manage Transportation and Shipping Documentation Prepare, review, and maintain Bills of Lading (BOLs), packing slips, customs documentation, and other shipping records required for domestic and cross-border shipments. Coordinate and book transportation with approved carriers to ensure customer delivery requirements are met. Work closely with carriers, customs brokers, freight forwarders, and internal departments to ensure shipments are dispatched accurately and all required documentation is complete. Monitor shipment schedules and communicate transportation issues or delays to the appropriate stakeholders. Maintain organized shipping and receiving records to support traceability, customer requirements, and regulatory compliance. Develop Processes and Maintain Operational Systems Develop and maintain standardized shipping and receiving procedures that improve consistency, efficiency, and operational control. Maintain accurate shipping and receiving transactions using company business systems, including shipping software, inventory management tools, ERP systems, and supporting documentation. Ensure shipping and receiving records are complete, accurate, and readily available. Identify opportunities to improve material flow, documentation accuracy, transportation efficiency, and overall department performance. Support the implementation and continuous improvement of operational systems and business processes. Maintain a Safe and Organized Operation Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient shipping and receiving area. Ensure materials and finished goods are properly identified and staged. Promote compliance with company safety policies, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), and food manufacturing standards. Perform routine inspections of forklifts and material handling equipment and report maintenance or safety concerns promptly. Maintain an organized loading dock that supports safe and efficient operations. Lead the Shipping & Receiving Function Provide day-to-day leadership and direction to the shipping and receiving supporting staff. Lead by example by actively participating in daily shipping and receiving activities. Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement. Collaborate with Production, Procurement, Customer Service, Quality, and Warehouse Operations to support uninterrupted operations and customer service. Recommend and implement improvements that strengthen the shipping and receiving function as the business continues to grow.
Qualifications Minimum 3 years of experience in shipping, receiving, logistics, or warehouse operations within a manufacturing environment. Experience in a food manufacturing environment is considered an asset. Previous experience leading or coordinating shipping and receiving operations, including transportation coordination, shipping documentation, and material handling. Working knowledge of Bills of Lading (BOLs), packing slips, customs documentation, carrier bookings, and cross-border shipping requirements. Experience using shipping, warehouse management, inventory management, or ERP systems. Forklift certification (or the ability to obtain certification upon hire) and experience operating forklifts and other material handling equipment. Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to establish priorities, build structure, and collaborate effectively across departments and with external transportation providers.
