The Shift Lead is responsible for overseeing the production and rendering areas alongside the Saskatoon Management Team. As a key leadership position for the Saskatoon Plant, the Shift Lead is a diverse role with a variety of accountabilities including: employee supervision, people management, and ensuring all rendering operations are handled in accordance with established SOPs. The Shift Lead will contribute to and be responsible for maintaining a safe and orderly production environment. This will be in addition to operating the DUPPS cooker system, boiler operation and environmental control systems.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership to hourly staff to maintain productivity while limiting and resolving conflicts
  • Monitor operations, collect and review records necessary to ensure efficient processing and utilization of plant equipment
  • Active problem-solving of daily production issues that arise
  • Ensure open channels of communication between management and employees

Train necessary personnel

  • Work closely with Health & Safety Team to encourage a safety culture where employees do not put themselves or others at risk

Rendering Process System Operations

  • Control the flow of products through conveyors, pumps, centrifuges, pressors and other internal processes
  • Manage conveyor speeds, pump speeds, time, temperatures, flows and motor load
  • Ensure all Critical Control Points (CCP) and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) are followed

Test product on a regular basis to ensure quality standards are met

Steam Plant and Environmental System Operations

  • Actively monitor boilers and associated equipment used for steam generation
  • Monitor waste water and air pollution equipment to ensure all applicable environmental requirements are met
  • Perform water tests and collection of samples for offsite testing

Additional Responsibilities

  • Operate forklifts, skid steers and other hoisting devices when necessary
  • Perform shift work based on company business needs which evolve and change in response to customer demands
  • Work overtime as instructed to ensure minimal downtime of facilities

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

  • Previous leadership experience in a similar environment or industry required
  • Minimum of a valid Class 3 Power Engineer Certificate and Operating License issued by TSASK
  • Experience with operating skid-steers, forklifts and/or other mobile equipment is an asset
  • Strong knowledge of all Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and HACCP
  • Ability to read or interpret diagrams, schematic drawings and manuals to determine work procedures
  • Proficiency in English, both written and verbal, with strong communication skills
  • Mechanically inclined
  • Ability to frequently move, carry, lift, push and pull equipment up to 50 lbs without assistance and occasionally greater with assistance
  • Perform repetitive motions including bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing and reaching overhead above the shoulders daily
  • Adaptable to adverse conditions including confined space, heights, weather, odours and animal by-products
  • Ability to multitask, trouble shoot, and solve process related issues
  • Ability to work effectively alone as well as part of a team
