Company & Position Overview Faster.Smarter.Safer. This is how Aecon Utilities is committed to delivering projects. As part of our Aecon Utilities sector, Aecon Utility Engineering (AUE) is a division focusing on engineering design, project and quality management, employing over 100 engineers, technicians, projects managers, and clerical staff.

Aecon Utilities Engineering is seeking a Stations Engineer to join our team and lead technical aspects of our clients stations projects. This role combines station electrical design and mentorship of junior designers to support for a portfolio of substation asset upgrades including transformers & switchgear, relay replacements, RTU installations and station battery and charger renewal

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and review station design packages including:
  • Protection & Control (P&C) schematics, wiring diagrams, panel wiring and communication diagrams.
  • Relay upgrade designs (e.g., SEL-587Z, SEL-2440) and RTU integration.
  • Station battery replacement and charger renewal
  • Bill of Materials (BOM), equipment specifications, and relay settings.
  • Prepare construction work packages, work instructions, and step plans.
  • Ensure compliance with standards, CSA C22 series, and ANSI/NETA ATS.
  • Work closely with the Senior Project Manager to plan, schedule, and deliver projects.
  • Translate technical requirements into actionable plans for non-technical stakeholders.
  • Support procurement, construction coordination, and commissioning activities.
  • Mentor and guide junior designers and engineers.
  • Provide drafting support in AutoCAD or MicroStation when required.
  • Act as the technical authority for station design within the team.
  • Assist with relay programming, RTU configuration, and system integration.
  • Support factory acceptance tests (FAT) and site acceptance tests (SAT).
  • Ensure as-built documentation and record updates are completed.
  • Serve as the primary technical liaison with the client and internal teams.
  • Participate in design reviews and technical meetings.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • P.Eng. designation or eligibility in Ontario.
  • 5+ years in substation or station design, including P&C and RTU systems.
  • Familiarity with utility standards is an asset.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD or similar drafting tools.
  • Knowledge of protection relays, SCADA/RTU systems, and fiber communication.
  • Strong understanding of high-voltage equipment and relay coordination.
  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Experience with relay programming and commissioning.
  • Familiarity with SAP or utility asset management systems.
