This is a Temporary Contract position for up to Twelve (12) Months Sinai Health is looking for an experienced Registered Nurse (RN) to support our Prenatal Diagnosis and Medical Genetics Department in concert with the Ontario Fetal Centre and Medical Disorders of Pregnancy Clincs at Mount Sinai Hospital. Reporting to the Patient Care Manager, this RN role serves to provide exceptional support to patients through various stages of their high risk pregnancy journey. You will support patients by providing patient education regarding the various procedures provided with their potential risks and post procedure monitoring. You will also support the providers during procedures with skin prep, handling of equipment, and specimens.

About This Team The Prenatal Diagnosis Unit and Medical Genetics program is a regional tertiary program that provides counselling and support to families undergoing genetic testing, counselling and care planning. We care for a large prenatal population, from preconception or preimplantation, providing support for diagnosed anomalies, chromosome abnormalities, positive prenatal and postnatal screening, follow up for babies diagnosed with antenally diagnosed abnormalities, counselling for future pregnancies, including ethnic related genetic conditions and other populations at risk. We have a strong academic and research focus, and provide clinical placements for the University of Toronto MSc program, residents in Pediatrics, Medical Genetics, Obstetrics and Gynecology and fellows from the perinatology training program, Maternal Fetal Medicine fellowships and trainees, and the CCMG program in Medical Genetics and Cytogenetics/molecular Genetics, international observers, clinicians and scientists. We also work with many community partners, hospitals and programs as a collaborative approach in supporting patients and families through their journey.

In This Role You Will

• Deliver family-centred care, as the primary nurse for pregnant patients and their families requiring genetics testing, within the high-risk Special Pregnancy Program (SPP)
• Carry out complex psychosocial individual and family assessments
• Support pregnant persons and families through the various ethical decisions that may be required as they explore various treatment options
• Work within an interdisciplinary team, coordinating care for this patient group and acting as a liaison between high risk clinics, the Genetics service and the Procedure Room team as necessary
• Communicate daily with other team members such as physicians, residents, fellows, nurses, social work, and Cytogenetics Lab regarding samples sent
• Document patient information and results as per hospital protocols and in alignment with College of Nurses of Ontario standards, and create visits in the system and labels, when clerical staff is not available
• Prepare procedure room with required lab fluids and sterile trays for procedures. Maintain proper equipment function of procedure room including forceps, ultrasound machine, exam table, lighting, and order new instruments and other supplies as necessary
• Provide patient education/teaching and support during and about procedures, recognizing individual patient needs through the lens of diversity, equity and inclusion
• Perform required clinical care related to biologic sample acquisition and preparation for testing, medication/blood product administration as necessary and patient monitoring post-procedure
• Address phone calls of patients related to procedure (symptoms/concerns)
• Participate in program planning, quality improvement, health professional learner education, professional development activities, the updating of procedure room manuals and contribute to the training/orientation of new staff
• Perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required

Job Requirements Mandatory

• Current certificate of registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
• A baccalaureate degree from a CNO-approved nursing program or equivalent education combined with experience
• Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification
• 3-5 years of recent clinical experience in perinatal nursing

Preferred

• Recent experience working in an amniocentesis procedure room
• Recent experience assisting with outpatient procedures
• Recent experience working in an ambulatory setting
