Position Overview

In this role, you’ll be a trusted business advisor and provide leadership in the provision of a full range of services in tax for the FortisBC group of companies and its affiliates.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide leadership in the preparation and review of quarterly and annual income tax provisions and financial statements disclosures. Work closely with the financial reporting group to meet income tax reporting obligations. Play a key role in maintaining effective controls in a SOX 404 environment within the tax area, ensuring all required documentation exists and has been reviewed and approved.
  • Lead and manage the tax compliance process, including the preparation, review and filing of complex returns.
  • Provide leadership in federal and provincial tax controversy and audit management, including developing audit strategies, maintaining good business relationship with tax authorities and negotiating settlements.
  • Participate in due diligence of corporate acquisitions and reorganizations, including analyzing complex tax aspects of agreements and advising management of the tax implications and opportunities for after-tax cash and earnings optimization.
  • Maintain an up-to-date detailed knowledge of current tax legislation and assess its implications for the company.
  • Research tax issues, prepare documentation, memos and support materials to substantiate the tax positions and amounts filed, ensuring compliance with tax laws and regulations.
  • Manage the development of tax planning initiatives and implementation, including the review and execution of legal documents.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to provide business and tax advice on strategic and operational decisions. Assist with the evaluation of potential tax risks.
  • Assist with reviews of business forecasts and projects.
  • Contribute to the training and the development of staff via presentations and/or discussion.

What it takes:

  • A Canadian Chartered Professional Accountant designation, completion of the CICA In Depth Tax Program, a total of eight years’ experience, including a minimum of five years’ tax experience in public practice and three years’ experience in a leadership capacity.

  • Experience in a regulated environment and with SOX 404 is considered an asset.

  • Additional experience within the tax group of a large corporation is considered an asset.

  • Great communications skills to distill tax matters to junior staff, senior management, and other tax professionals in the services group.

  • A demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

  • A demonstrated ability to analyze and assess financial information and the related tax implications

  • Knowledge of commodity taxes

  • Willingness to learn and a drive for curiosity and to embrace new challenges

In this role, you will have the option to participate in a flexible work program, enabling you to work from an approved flex location in British Columbia up to 85 days a year (equivalent to approximately two days a week), subject to business or operational needs.
