About the role

Position: Registered Nurse Department: Day Surgery & Post Anesthetic Care Unit Duration Approximately Eighteen (18) Months

PACU nursing staff, anaesthetists and surgeons work collaboratively to help patients recover from the anaesthesia that was given during surgery. Patients are monitored closely by highly skilled nurses to ensure a successful and faster recovery during the immediate time after surgery. Recognizing the unique needs of pediatric patients, the North Bay Regional Health Centre provides a separate PACU area for children to both wait for and recover from surgery. PACU nursing staff are trained to provide services in both the PACU and the Day Surgery Recovery areas, thereby providing seamless quality patient care.

QUALIFICATIONS

Certification/Experience/Knowledge:

  • Current Certificate of Registration - College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing required
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certificate is a condition of employment
  • Minimum (2-3 years) related surgical experience in an active care setting (within the last 2-3 years) required
  • Minimum (1-2 years) Post Anaesthetic Care Unit/Day Surgery experience (within the last 2-3 years) required
  • Minimum (1-2 years) Paediatric Surgical Experience (within last 2-3 years) required
  • Knowledge of Perioperative practices including knowledge of various types of anaesthesia an asset
  • Knowledge of adult and paediatric learning principles combined with recent teaching experience an asset
  • Certification in Basic ECG Interpretation required
  • Current certificate in I.V. Therapy care and management required
  • Certification in PCA care and management required
  • Certification in Arterial Lines care and management required
  • Certification in Epidural Lines care and management required
  • Current Advanced Cardiac life Support (ACLS) Certificate an asset

Skills/Abilities:

  • Must demonstrate excellent level of interpersonal skills
  • Must demonstrate excellent level of written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with all members of the multidisciplinary team, clients, families, regional support services and community partners required
  • Ability to provide health teaching to individuals and groups required
  • Must be committed to continuing education on an annual basis and demonstrate commitment to quality improvement required
  • Ability to effectively assume a leadership role as a collaborative member of the health team required
  • Ability to assume responsibility for patient care in a total patient care climate required
  • Able to meet the physical demands required to provide nursing care to all patients required
  • Ability to problem-solve and function in fast-paced environment required
  • Excellent demonstrated assessment, critical thinking and intervention skills required
  • Must demonstrate basic computer knowledge
  • Must demonstrate commitment to ensure personal safety, safety of fellow workers, patients, volunteers, and visitors
  • Ability to support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events required
  • Must demonstrate good attendance and work record
  • Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is required.All unilingual candidates are encouraged to apply and may be considered if the identified French requirement has been met or there are no successful bilingual candidates. The North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC) is a unique healthcare organization with three primary roles. It provides acute care services to North Bay and its surrounding communities, it is the district referral centre providing specialist services for smaller communities in the area, and it is the specialized mental health service provider serving all of northeast Ontario

NBRHC has 389 beds and numerous outpatient and outreach services in North Bay and throughout the northeast region.

NBRHC is one of four major acute care hospitals serving northeast Ontario; the others being Sault Area Hospital, Timmins and District Hospital and Health Sciences North (Sudbury). The area is also served by small community hospitals like Mattawa and West Nipissing General hospitals.

NBRHC’s Regional Mental Health Services provides inpatient beds in North Bay and Sudbury and outpatient and outreach services that throughout the region—from Hudson Bay to Muskoka from Sault Ste. Marie to the Quebec border.
