About the role

The Shelter Supervisor upholds The Mustard Seed's ministry mission by

maintaining a high level of professionalism and showing respect to everyone who enters the space and to the local residents. Reporting to Shelter Manager, the Shelter Supervisor manages the daily operations of the shelter. This individual also oversees the recruitment, training, and performance management of the staff. Daily responsibilities for this role include crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and coaching conversations.

Employment Type: Full-Time, Permanent

Schedule: Sunday to Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.

Reporting to: Shelter Manager

Location: Central Shelter, Edmonton, AB RFR#: 2140

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Champion a positive team dynamic and serve as a constructive ambassador for The Mustard Seed
  • Lead the shelter team, ensuring daily tasks and responsibilities of support staff are completed
  • Oversee efforts to build trusted relationships with vulnerable citizens who utilize The Mustard Seed's programs and services
  • Ensure the shelter team maintains a strong, visible presence across the property, identifying and addressing opportunities to optimize safety and build community
  • Prioritize and provide solutions to staff concerns and guest issues
  • Ensure that clients’ records and information are kept confidential, updated, and secure
  • Plan and execute "housing first" programs that engage our guests, offering them fellowship, hope, and healing
  • Provide consistent feedback to team members and conduct monthly one-on-one meetings
  • Train, supervise, schedule, and evaluate the shelter team while promoting professional growth.
  • Handle daily operations of the shelter
  • Recruit and train team members, supporting HR by submitting necessary forms and conducting interviews
  • Manage the performance of team leads and support staff
  • Establish and enforce shelter policies and procedures
  • Collaborate with the Shelter Manager to create and implement innovative programs and develop schedules, reports, and budgets for the shelter
  • Support and manage conflict resolution as necessary
  • Coordinate with the Health and Safety Analyst to uphold and promote The Mustard Seed's Health and Safety policies
  • Facilitate and participate in all required meetings and activities 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Post-secondary Degree or Diploma in a relevant discipline is preferred
  • 1+ year of leadership experience
  •  Minimum of 2 years working in a frontline role
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities with strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proficient in providing both positive and constructive feedback
  • Effective problem-solving capabilities
  • Experience and knowledge in addressing mental health issues and addictions
  • Self-motivated with the ability to collaborate in a cross-functional team
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and relevant software
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The Mustard Seed Central Shelter operates 24/7, necessitating the Shelter Supervisor to carry and delegate responsibilities as needed
  • Occasionally, the role may require working beyond regular working hours to address urgent matters and ensure smooth operations
  • This position is often fast-paced and requires moderate amount of mental effort to successfully accomplish the essential job functions such as responding to clients, intense situations (including traumatic incidents) and analyzing information, problem solving and providing information
  • The working environment for this position requires moderate amounts of walking, climbing, standing, sitting, lifting, carrying, and daily interactions with colleagues and guests
  • Employees are to be aware that many of our clients may experience difficulties or impairment at times, which could result in them uttering threats, discriminatory statements, and other insults at your person. This may in a raised voice, or in seeing unpredictable behaviour up to and including the possibility of them becoming aggressive
    • Training on how to respond is provided, but this is to be considered typical working conditions. Many of our clients are unaware of the impact of these comments.
  • This position requires the training in usage of a two-way radio communications; MS Office based computer programming, as well as the HMIS database system, FDARP, FOIP, First aid, NVCI, and SafeTalk
