Reporting to the Program Manager, Operations, this position is responsible for the leadership and operations of the Emergency Department (ED) at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital. The Unit Manager is accountable for the daily management of the ED and facilitates efficient function and performance, supporting quality care. The position works within defined budgets and provides direction to maximize patient flow. The Unit Manager adheres to professional expectations and serves as a role model for the Covenant Health mission, vision and values with the program areas. The Unit Manager is responsible for the day-to-day unit operation including direct supervision of unit staff. This role interacts with physicians, nursing staff, other unit staff, and other departments and interdisciplinary team members on a daily basis and provides clinical support to patient/resident care by exception only. The position facilitates and fosters interdisciplinary participation in patient/resident care activities and coaches, mentors, motivates and empowers clinical staff. The Unit Manager plays a key role in safe and timely patient care and patient/client outcomes. They must possess considerable leadership abilities and clinical knowledge. The role must possess knowledge related to protocols and standard procedures for the department and patient/client population. They apply leadership, critical thinking and problem-solving skills to make decisions regarding management of the ED. The Unit Manager uses sound judgment, initiative, and creativity to resolve issues brought forward by staff physicians, patient/clients and/or other areas of care. The responsibilities of this position are focused around four critical aspects of care and service: People and teams Access and flow Quality and Safety Efficiency and resources. This position is non-unionized. Please note: Travel is required and may include the use of a personal vehicle. A standard driver's abstract may be required for use of corporate lease vehicles.

Required Qualifications
Graduate of a recognized Registered Nursing program required. Baccalaureate degree in Nursing (BScN) recommended. Minimum three (3) years recent nursing experience required. Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory/management experience recommended. Charge nurse experience required. Combination of education and experience may be considered. Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills. Ability to work in a fast paced, highly stressful environment. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to provide leadership and function as a team member. Excellent organizational and conflict resolution skills. Ability to be objective in decision making. Commitment to safe, effective and ethical patient care and work practices. Commitment to Covenant Health Mission and Values. Proven dependability and accountability. Current registration from the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) required. Current Heart and Stroke Foundation B.L.S. Certification (Level C) Health Care Provider required.
Additional Required Qualifications
Extensive emergency experience and demonstrated informal leadership in a clinical setting required. Participation in flexible work arrangements may be required to support department-specific initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous Urban Tertiary Emergency Department experience in a charge nurse role preferred. Clinical leadership, quality improvement, and educator experience preferred.
