Duties and Responsibilities:
General Duties:
Works under the general supervision of the Chief Operating Engineer (1st Class) and the Shift Engineer (2nd Class)
Operating Duties:
- Third Class Engineer (Assistant Shift Engineer) assists in the operation and maintenance of the Cogen, boilers, chillers, cooling towers and related equipment throughout the campus.
- Assistant Shift Engineer makes frequent tests on boiler water, make-up water and condensate and does the necessary adjustments in chemical feed rates to ensure that chemical concentrations are maintained within recommended limits to prevent corrosion of equipment and to maintain the integrity of the systems.
- Make daily rounds and maintains records in equipment logs for chillers and associated equipment.
- Report any issues to the Shift Engineer and participate in resolving the issue.
- Investigate issues called in during quiet hours.
- Make necessary adjustments to controls settings and equipment to ensure safe and efficient plant operation and dependable service.
- Participate in the daily maintenance of the Central Heating Plant equipment.
- Seasonal cleaning Chillers, cooling towers and associated equipment.
- Maintain water treatment and completes the required testing on cooling towers and chilled water.
- Provide relief duties as needed.
- Other duties as assigned by the Chief Operating Engineer or their delegate
Qualifications:
The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
- A creative approach to problem solving
- Manual dexterity and mechanical aptitude
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing in English
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers
- Ability to work alone or as a member of a team
- Physical strength and stamina
- Must be able to work independently in a trustworthy and honest manner.
- Must be able to meet the standards of physical requirements for the position.
Education and Experience:
The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
- Third Class Engineers certificate
- Must obtain an Second Class Operating Engineers certificate within 2.5 years.
