The Lands Branch of the Ministry of Environment is seeking a highly motivated and independent individual to play a key role in providing technical expertise and to lead the management and analysis of a wide range of geospatial data to support land management decisions and project authorizations.

The primary responsibilities of this job include:

  • Undertaking high level strategic work by developing systems and documented procedures for the transfer, conversion, import and management of spatial data obtained from both external and internal sources (e.g., GPS data, satellite imagery, aerial photos).
  • Maintaining and updating the data layer for the provincial protected and conserved areas network program. This includes working with other Government of Saskatchewan ministries and annual reporting to the Government of Canada to ensure that Saskatchewan's achievements are reflected accurately.
  • Act as advisor on information management issues for the Lands Branch and educates/trains others as to the application of technology.
  • Managing the development of data standards, procedures and policies for the branch to ensure the optimal use of GIS technologies (e.g., timely access to spatial data to meet business requirements);
  • Developing processes and documenting procedures for the transfer, conversion, import and management of spatial data for GIS analysis and mapping ensuring that spatial data created by the branch adheres to government standards
  • Explores opportunities to improve existing GIS procedures through innovation and development of new geospatial applications and services in response to emerging business needs.
  • Implements quality assurance/quality control measures and manage large and comprehensive spatial data sets.

Typically, the knowledge for this position would be attained through a university degree in Geomatics, Geography, Environmental Studies, Computer Science or a related discipline with courses directly related to GIS or supplemented with a GIS certificate. A minimum of two years work experience using GIS although an equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
