About the role

The Emergency Department is open 24 hrs/day 7 days per week. It is staffed by a multi-disciplinary team of registered nurses, registered respiratory therapists, social services, pastoral care, crisis intervention, orthopedic technicians and other members of our health care team.

QUALIFICATIONS

Certification/Experience/Knowledge:

  • Current Certificate of Registration ~ College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing required
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers (HCP) Certificate is required (recent within the last twelve months)
  • Current Advanced Cardiac life Support (ACLS) Certificate (within 2 years) required
  • Coronary Care Course (min. 25 hrs.) and/or Lead II/12 Lead Interpretation Course (min. 25 hrs.) required
  • Minimum (2-3 years) experience working on a Medical or Surgical Unit required
  • Minimum (1-2 years) experience in Emergency (within the last 2-3 years) required
  • Canadian Triage & Acuity Scale (CTAS) Certification an asset
  • Experience in Mental Health Nursing an asset
  • Courses in: Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC), Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Emergency Nursing Certification preferred
  • Must have or be able to obtain certification of added nursing skills and delegated medical acts specific to Emergency by the end of orientation period:
    • Cardioversion/defibrillation
    • Application of external pacemaker

Skills/Abilities:

  • Must demonstrate excellent level of interpersonal skills

  • Must demonstrate excellent level of written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with all members of the multidisciplinary team, clients, families, regional support services and community partners required

  • Ability to provide health teaching to individuals and groups required

  • Must be committed to continuing education on an annual basis and demonstrate commitment to quality improvement required

  • Ability to effectively assume a leadership role as a collaborative member of the health team required

  • Ability to assume responsibility for patient care in a total patient care climate required

  • Able to meet the physical demands required to provide nursing care to all patients required

  • Ability to problem-solve and function in fast-paced environment required

  • Excellent demonstrated assessment, critical thinking and intervention skills required

  • Must demonstrate basic computer knowledge

  • Must demonstrate commitment to ensure personal safety, safety of fellow workers, patients, volunteers, and visitors

  • Ability to support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events required

  • Must demonstrate good attendance and work record

  • Bilingualism (Advanced Level English/French) is required. All unilingual candidates are encouraged to apply and may be considered if the French requirement has been met or if there are no successful bilingual candidates. A formal French test will be conducted to evaluate the proficiency level.

The North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC) is a unique healthcare organization with three primary roles. It provides acute care services to North Bay and its surrounding communities, it is the district referral centre providing specialist services for smaller communities in the area, and it is the specialized mental health service provider serving all of northeast Ontario

NBRHC has 389 beds and numerous outpatient and outreach services in North Bay and throughout the northeast region.

NBRHC is one of four major acute care hospitals serving northeast Ontario; the others being Sault Area Hospital, Timmins and District Hospital and Health Sciences North (Sudbury). The area is also served by small community hospitals like Mattawa and West Nipissing General hospitals.

NBRHC’s Regional Mental Health Services provides inpatient beds in North Bay and Sudbury and outpatient and outreach services that throughout the region—from Hudson Bay to Muskoka from Sault Ste. Marie to the Quebec border.
