Health Association Nova Scotia (HANS)

Health Association Nova Scotia (HANS) is a member-based, not-for-profit, non-government association with over 65 years’ experience delivering shared services, policy support, advocacy and expertise to a wide range of health and health-related organizations whose mandates positively impact the social determinants of health across Nova Scotia. Our members represent organizations including (but not limited to) Nova Scotia Health, the IWK Health Centre, licensed nursing homes, home care agencies, organizations providing services in the Disability Support Program sector, and the Early Learning and Child Care sector.

HANS provides shared services across a number of domains. Our largest core shared service is Group Benefits Solutions. Serving over 50,000 employees and retirees, we are the largest, longest standing provider of group benefits administration services in Nova Scotia’s health system. Additional services offered to our members at not-for-profit rates include payroll services, shared financial services, labour law and labour relations expertise, human resources solutions, immigration support, technical services and group purchasing.

HANS is also a joint sponsor of the Nova Scotia Health Employees’ Pension Plan, one of the largest in Atlantic Canada.

Current Opportunity

The Governance and Nominations Committee of the Board is seeking applications for one (1) volunteer Director position. The Board is a competency-based group of volunteer directors committed to advancing HANS’ mission, vision, values, and strategic goals. The Board is also committed to ensuring that it represents the diversity of the Nova Scotian population and the members we support.

Role of the Board

  • Provide stewardship and strategic leadership to ensure HANS fulfills its mandate in alignment with its mission, vision, and values.
  • Set and monitor strategic direction, including oversight of organizational performance against strategic priorities.
  • Oversee enterprise risk management and support a strong culture of governance, quality, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Support Board effectiveness and efficiency through active participation in meetings, preparation, and committee work as required.

Desired Qualifications and Competencies

  • Ability to provide strategic direction related to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB), including fostering inclusive culture and advancing equity-focused policies and practices.
  • Strong governance background and understanding of the fiduciary and strategic responsibilities of a Board of Directors.
  • Business and financial acumen (e.g., interpreting financial statements, budgets, risk, and audit considerations).
  • Political awareness and ability to navigate complex stakeholder environments.
  • Knowledge of (or interest in learning about) Nova Scotia’s health and community care system and the continuum of care.
  • Strong communication skills and collaborative approach.

Time Commitment

Directors are expected to attend regular Board meetings and participate on at least one Board committee. Board and committee meetings currently take place every second month. The term of appointment is in accordance with HANS’ bylaws and governance policies (typically one year, with eligibility for re-nominations to two and three year terms).
