Purpose** Reporting to the Mine Manager, the Chief Mine Geologist will be responsible for leading the Production Geology team for Hoyle Pond Mine. Responsibilities of the Chief Mine Geologist include managing the Production Geology team, overseeing underground grade control activities, supporting the Mine Plan, and playing a key role in the reconciliation process.

  • Manage and oversee the Mine Geology department’s grade control activities including supervising the collection, processing, compilation, interpretation and reporting of the mine’s geologic information,
  • support skill development and personal growth in Mine Geology team members through active coaching, seeking training opportunities, and fostering a positive work environment,
  • support both Long and Short-term ore modelling,
  • coordinate and collaborate with others to effectively and efficiently execute the Hoyle Pond Mine Plan,
  • work effectively and efficiently within the Mine Geology team, with other departments including Mine Engineering, Mine Operations, and with contractors to maximize ore recovery and minimize dilution while promoting and respecting Discovery Silver’s Policies as well as regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, supervise, and be responsible for all underground grade control activities including:
  • geological mapping and sampling conducted daily by the Geology team, ensuring QA/QC protocols are respected in terms of geological data collection and record-keeping to ensure data integrity throughout the mining process,
  • use of data systems such as production tracking systems to monitor and report on daily, weekly and monthly geological and mining results,
  • use of industry-standard techniques and geological and other software such as Deswik, Fusion, LeapfrogGeo, Datamine Studio RM, and/or Maptek Vulcan to compile, analyze, and interpret 3d spatial and analytical data, report geological results, and using those interpretations and results, to support Long- and Short-term ore models. Also using those techniques and tools to provide sound geological advice regarding planned work and mining execution, in order that ore zones are mined effectively and efficiently.
  • coaching and mentoring of Geology team members on geology, use of geological data systems, the underground mine environment, and underground grade control execution including by conducting underground visits.
  • promotion of a strong commitment to positive behaviour in the areas of Health, Safety, the Environment, and a respectful, supportive, and positive work environment.
  • Must have a strong understanding of ore-controls for Archean gold deposits, underground mining, and underground Grade Control activities as well as the ability to coach/train Geology team members in these topics to enhance understanding and application throughout the Geology team.
  • Must have strong analytical skills and be proficient in the use of industry-standard geological software to compile, visualize, and interpret 3D spatial, geological, and assay data. Ensure timely and accurate compilation of results to support operational decision-making.
  • Must have the ability to identify areas for improvements to procedures, systems, or processes and follow-through to implementation.
  • Coaching, mentoring, and skills development of Production Geology team members are key components of the Chief Mine Geologists role aiming to increase capabilities, ensure job promotion, and succession. Thus, strong interpersonal skills are a requirement as well as consistent positive leadership.
  • Responsible for the planning and safe execution of delineation (infill) drill programs, ensuring that delineation drilling is conducted according to the Company’s logging, sampling, QA/QC and Chain of Custody procedures and providing guidance to team members supporting this activity. Provide periodic reports of delineation drill plans and results. Ensure compliance with Health, Safety and Environmental standards is maintained for drilling activities according to Company protocols and policies by supervision of regular drill rig visits and inspections.
  • Integrate geological, geochemical, and geophysical datasets to develop and refine gold mineralization concepts and geological models to identify and prioritize mining targets and opportunities to add to the Mine Plan.
  • Effectively collaborate with the Chief Mine Engineer, Mine Engineering, Mine Operations, and contractors to optimize maximum ore extraction and minimize dilution into the ore stream. Responsible for geological input into the development design and stoping design process and approval of the geological aspects of mine design.
  • Effectively collaborate with the Chief Mine Engineer and Mine Technical Services team members to report mine production results and to assess the reconciliation between planned ore models, executed mining, and milling results (mine-to-mill reconciliation), to identify areas of continuous improvement in estimation through mining execution.
  • Responsible for preparation and management of the Mine Geology department’s annual capital and operating budgets and schedules for execution of the planned activities including delineation diamond drilling.
  • Responsible for review and approval of tonnage and grades forecast in mining targets jointly with other Mineral Resource specialists.
  • Other duties as may be required from time to time.

Training and Education

  • Bachelor of Science (Geology or Earth Science) degree, or degree in geology-related discipline is required. Master’s of Science (Geology or Earth Science) degree or degree in geology-related discipline is an asset.
  • Must hold or be eligible to obtain Ontario Professional Geologist designation.
  • 10 years of experience in underground production geology in senior or supervisory role(s) is preferred, may include Exploration experience.

  • Experience within Archean shear zone-hosted gold deposit(s) is preferred.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills. Innovative and a proven ability to work with others.
  • Skilled use of databases (Fusion, and/or acQuire), GIS (ArcView), CAD (Deswik) or geological software (Leapfrog Geo, Leapfrog Edge, Datamine Studio RM, Supervisor, and/or Maptek Vulcan) are assets. Proficiency with MS Office is required.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and confidently, on a timely basis.
  • Must have valid Driver’s License.
  • Underground Common Core is an asset.
  • Applicants must be eligible to work in Canada.
