About the role
Under the supervision of the Program Manager, or designate, the Caseworker shall provide mediation and diversion services, crime prevention, and Restorative Justice community-education.
What you'll do
Caseworker duties include the following responsibilities:
- Provide information and direct mediation services to victims, offenders and others in conflict upon request.
- Provide the appropriate referrals to community supports and services as to assure the quality of the victim and offender participation.
- Supply information as needed for reports, records, statistics, and other information as requested
- Provide mediation and community service order placements as necessary.
- Promote awareness and understanding of mediation diversion programs
- Deliver presentations aimed to increase community knowledge
- Deliver presentations and workshops aimed to increase community restorative justice understanding and skills
- Deliver programs that are aimed at reducing the likelihood of school children becoming involved in criminal activity, that provide information about the impact of criminal behaviour on others students and the community and increasing skills
- Deliver programs that are aimed at reducing the likelihood of adults becoming involved in criminal activity, that provide information about the impact of criminal behaviour on others and the community and increasing skills
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with funding partners, staff, other agencies and the community at large.
- Participate in community committees, forums and special projects
- Maintain client and file confidentiality.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Assets:
- Working knowledge of the Mission, Vision and Values of the John Howard Society of Saskatchewan.
- Working knowledge of the characteristics of disadvantaged persons.
- Working knowledge of Restorative Justice and Harm Reduction practices.
- Understanding and commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action.
- Excellent communication, organizational, interpersonal, and time management skills.
- Exceptional writing and case management skills.
- Strong verbal skills and the ability to communicate professionally.
- Resourceful, flexible, and well organized.
- Professional, responsive, and a positive work attitude.
- Ability to make sound, timely, and accurate judgment while navigating crisis.
- Ability to work independently.
- Must maintain a positive relationship with clients, other staff, businesses, and government agencies.
- Demonstrate empathy for those impacted by the Criminal Justice System.
Qualifications
Education:
- Secondary education from Saskatchewan Polytechnic or Community Colleges or University Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and/or minimum 1 year of practical experience working with individuals impacted by socio-economic issues including homelessness, trauma, addiction, mental health, poverty, and the child welfare
Practical Experience:
- Working knowledge and experience with individuals impacted by socio-economic issues, including: homelessness, trauma, addiction, mental health, poverty, and the child welfare system.
- Working with a range of diverse clients, indiscriminate of: age, gender, sexual orientation, abilities, socio-economic status, religious preference, etc.
Other:
- First Aid, ASIST, Non-violent Crisis Intervention, Food Safe would be considered an asset.
- Valid / Insurable Saskatchewan Driver’s License, insurable to drive clients in JHSS-owned vehicles.
- Cleared Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check, completed three (3) months prior to start date.
Capability:
- Computer skills with emphasis on Microsoft 365 (SharePoint, Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)
