Job Description

Department, Unit or Project Description: Nature and Scope of the Student Wellness Centre:

The Student Wellness Centre is committed to the goals of:

  1. Provision of comprehensive high quality primary medical and mental health care services to currently enrolled McMaster students.
  2. Development of clinic based as well as University wide health education/promotion programs as well as complementary therapy.
  3. Supervision and education to Nursing student, medical residents, counselling interns, etc.

The Physician and the Medical Lead work co-operatively to ensure the efficient and responsible delivery of primary medical and mental health care to the students at McMaster University. This includes undergraduate, graduate, part-time students, and international students.

Job Summary:

The physician will provide primary care medical care for a university based student population; make appropriate referrals; possess a good knowledge of the health related issues experienced by a diverse adolescent/young adult population; demonstrate a positive attitude, tact and diplomacy in interactions with individuals and departments; demonstrate the ability to work as a member of an inter-disciplinary team; have the desire to become familiar with the delivery of health care in an academic organization.

These goals help to fulfill the mandate of Student Affairs to “provide our students with opportunities to discover learn and grow.” By offering high quality primary medical care on campus, the Student Wellness Centre assists in alleviating the impact of physical, mental and emotional ill health on the lives of students.

Accountabilities:

Clinical

  • Provides high quality, comprehensive/episodic primary medical and Mental Health Care to all McMaster students.
  • Assist the Medical Lead when necessary in reviewing laboratory and diagnostic reports,
  • Act as a backup when medical lead is away or on vacation.
  • Assist the Medical Lead with input on Medical policies/directives and other medical activities in the clinic when needed.
  • The physician will be a resource to the Medical Lead to give input on Medical activities noted in the clinic and to give feedback on Policies and Directives that are implemented within the clinic

Teaching

  • Participates in the teaching and supervision of PGY2 family medical residents when agreed by the Medical Lead for electives.

Community Liaison

  • Participates as requested by the Medical Lead in activities to develop and maintain relationships with the Hamilton Health Care Community
  • Participates and collaborates with OMA special interest groups when appropriate
  • Participates when agreed by the Medical Lead with Ontario University and College Health Association (OUCHA).
  • To assist the Medical Lead with initiatives to Collaborate with other departments within McMaster University.
  • Work in conjunction with the Medical Lead to assist with the Faculty of Health Sciences Family Medicine placements.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • M.D. and eligible for licensure in the Province of Ontario.

  • Preferred CCFP

  • Certification (required by law):

  • Member in good standing of the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons

  • Canadian Medical Protective Association of Malpractice Insurance (CMPA)

Experience:

  • Active membership in the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

  • Previous experience in a post-secondary setting of 5 years or more

  • Experience and proficiency with Electronic Medical Records

  • Knowledge and experience in treating medical and mental health issues relevant to emerging adults.

  • Awareness of diversity and cultural issues is essential.

  • Experience in gender affirming care or willingness to learn this skill

  • Contraceptive procedural skills such as IUD insertion is an asset

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, analytical reasoning, problem solving and conflict resolution.
  • Awareness of diversity and cultural issues is essential.
