Position Summary

Reporting to the Senior Manager for the Centre for Natural Products (CNP), the Research Associate contributes to multiple applied research projects ensuring that all tasks are completed on schedule, and on budget. The incumbent works directly with the Sr. Manager, external industrial partners, CNP staff, faculty, researchers, technologists and students in support of applied research project delivery.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the development of the Statement of Work and project plans for individual projects, providing input on project deliverables, milestones, research methods, variables and other test parameters and data collection.
  • Develops project plans for individual projects, allocating time and supporting the scheduling of human and equipment/instrumentation resources.
  • Executes agreed-upon experiments including: analytical testing, product development activities, sample preparation, and projects involving aspects of research scale cultivation, and applications of micro and molecular biology.
  • Gathers and analyzes research data and prepares research project reports and presentations. Communicates with researchers and clients to better understand technical challenges and potential solutions.
  • Develops and reviews standard operating procedures and literature reviews.
  • Maintains detailed and organized written and digital records of project status and other materials as needed in Centre designated systems, leading by example using best lab practices.
  • Mentors and trains students to establish a high standard for scientific credibility and rigor in applied research initiatives and approach to solutions.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a diploma or degree in chemistry, biology, microbiology, biochemistry or related discipline; an honours BSc. would be considered an asset

  • A minimum two (2) years of professional experience applying scientific approach in an industry or academic setting in analytical method development and method validation.

  • Experience with GMP, GPP, HACCP and/or other regulated work environment.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in analytical testing, raw material and finished product testing.

  • Experience with microbiological and molecular biological techniques.

  • Good aseptic technique is preferred.

  • Experience with PCR, plant culture and bio-containment hoods would be considered an asset.

  • Experience with process documentation and reporting; experience with statistical DOE is considered an asset.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of compliance, and supporting a safe work environment in a laboratory setting and worker responsibilities under WHMIS

  • Knowledge of the Cannabis Act and regulations would be an asset; Knowledge of Health Canada Controlled Substance regulation would be an asset.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to be able to communicate complex research principles and new knowledge

  • Demonstrated skills working with a team of applied researchers/lab technologists

  • Excellent computer skills and ability to create documents with tables, figures and other embedded elements

  • Excellent communication skills, dealing with both internal and external clients

  • Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills

  • Ability to manage time and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment
