Duties:

VIU Library is seeking a Copyright Assistant to provide the VIU Copyright Office support to faculty, students, and staff at our Cowichan, Nanaimo, and tiwšɛmawtxʷ campuses. The successful candidate is committed to providing timely and thorough copyright clearance services and contributing to a positive and high-functioning front-line services team.

The Copyright Assistant key tasks are:

  • Reporting to the Librarian, Coordinator of Copyright and Open Licensing (Copyright Office) on all tasks and projects.
  • Working closely with the Librarian, Coordinator of Copyright and Open Licensing to complete reviews and assessments, keep updated on Canadian copyright legislation and case law, and ensure records are accurate and complete.
  • Communicating with faculty and staff on requested copyright protected materials for course packs and classroom use and ensuring materials' terms of use are being met.
  • Completing fair dealing assessments.
  • Reviewing library and other purchased licenses for terms of use.
  • Within reason and when warranted, purchasing with credit card individual transactional licenses for materials.
  • Adding cover page or terms of use to materials with copyright wording to prevent further copying and other terms of use from licenses.
  • Recording and tracking all course packs and requested classroom materials and their clearances.
  • Keeping financial records and filing/reconciling purchases to Finance Office.
  • Communicating with the Campus Store and Print Shop to deliver materials for course packs and other print/digital materials.
  • Participating in Copyright Office projects as needed.
  • Promoting excellence in library services to VIU students and employees.
  • Advocating for, and contributing to, a demonstrably collaborative and proactive workplace culture

Required Qualifications:

Two-year Library and Information Technology diploma from an appropriately accredited institution. Minimum one years' public service library experience. Minimum six months' recent relevant academic library experience.

  • Interest in Canadian copyright law and willingness to train and keep up to date on copyright law and clearance services.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development in an evolving field.
  • Proficiency with standard office productivity software and other applications commonly used in an academic environment.
  • Ability to perform moderate physical labour on a periodic basis, including lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Work effectively as a member of a team and alone.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, being able to have nuanced conversations with faculty, students, and staff.
  • Commitment to exceptional customer service standards.
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, students, employees, and the public.
  • Experience handling credit card and debit transactions.
  • Paraprofessional level reference skills.
  • Paraprofessional level knowledge of bibliographic records.
  • Proven ability to perform duties quickly, accurately and efficiently under stressful conditions and deal with constant interruptions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution.

  • Canadian Copyright Certificate preferred, but not required.

  • Experience with multimedia technologies.

  • Familiarity with Evergreen integrated library system or other library systems.
