Posting Status Open to all current Town of Oakville employees and external applicants

Duration Approximately three months

Closing Date Applications for this position must be received at by no later than 11:59 pm on August 29, 2025. This position is under the direction of the Parks Supervisor - Construction and Technical Services and is charged with ensuring parks and open space construction, renovation and maintenance work is carried out according to departmental policy, sound construction principles and practices and applicable codes.

Job Responsibilities

  • Performing regular maintenance procedures on existing parks, open space and cemetery facilities, and the installation of development and improvement projects, i.e. playgrounds, splash pads, stairs, bridges, chain link fencing, benches, signage, unit pavers.
  • Performing parks construction work involving; carpentry, welding, painting, landscaping, fencing, playgrounds, building and furniture repairs.
  • Performs inspections on bridges and stairs to ensure the safe construction of these structures.
  • Assisting in maintaining necessary records for monthly inspections of Parks & Open Space facilities.
  • Keeping the Supervisor informed of any breakdowns, vandalism, and deterioration of Park facilities and amenities, in the form of written records.
  • Operating all tractors, vehicles, front-end loaders and attachments and, hand and power tools in a safe and efficient manner and in accordance with established standard operating procedures.
  • Performing daily circle checks on equipment, making any necessary minor repairs in the prescribed manner, and scheduling any major repairs with the Supervisor. Inspecting on and/or completing traffic safety plans in accordance with M.T.O.’s Book 7, as required.
  • Ensuring all tools and equipment are clean, lubricated and properly secured.
  • May be required to work shifts, i.e., weekends and/or nights or in other departments for short periods.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of Grade 12 education plus Certification in Construction & Design or related program from a recognized Post Secondary Institution specific to Drafting, Framing Techniques, Energy Efficiency, Blueprint reading and Basic Wiring or acceptable equivalent in education and experience.
  • Certifications in confined space entry and Forklift Operation, 0–8-ton crane, chainsaw certificate are preferred.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of related experience including welding, facility maintenance and landscape construction required.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety and Highway Traffic Act are required.
  • Applicants must demonstrate mechanical aptitude, be able to read construction drawings and prepare cost estimates when required.
  • Demonstrated effective communication, both oral and written, customer service and problem-solving skills; proficient time management skills and flexibility in adjusting between a variety of duties; and the ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
  • The successful candidate must have a valid and unrestricted Ontario class DZ driver’s licence (standard and automatic transmission) with a driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving behaviour. Note: Applicants with 6 or more points are ineligible for consideration. The successful applicant will be required to provide the Corporation with a current drivers abstract (no older than 30 days) prior to assuming the position and pass a Town administered road test prior to assuming the position.
