Job Description Union: Non-Union
Site: Toronto General Hospital
Department: Joint Department of Medical Imaging, Radiation Safety Services
Reports to: Manager, Radiation Safety Services
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Shifts: Days, evenings, and weekends as required
Status: Permanent Full Time
Closing Date: January 4, 2026
- Assist the Radiation Safety Officers (RSO) in ensuring compliance with the radiation safety program at the UHN, in accordance with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission Regulations, provincial x-ray safety regulations and UHN radiation safety polices
- Preparing technical reports regarding radiation safety including but not limited to shielding reports, dose reconstruction and assessment from unplanned events, and hazards/environmental assessments related to radioactive material and radiation emitting devices
- Assisting the RSO with investigating and reporting, as well as with initial assistance to radiation safety needs and initial response to emergencies
- Assists in the development, delivery and evaluation of radiation safety courses, guidelines and documents specific to UHN employees and other interested parties as required
- Provides operational supports to programs related to work approvals/permit activities, radioactive material orders and deliveries, inventory controls, leak testing, instrument calibrations, dosimetry assignments and exposure reviews, internal audits and inspections, and waste management
- Works with the Radiation Safety Officers and Radiation Safety Staff to prepare annual reports and license applications, as required by regulatory bodies
- Promotes and advocates the radiation safety culture throughout UHN to ensure compliance with regulations and internationally accepted QA guidelines and the safe implementation of new technologies/techniques
- Assisting in the management of a comprehensive electronic database of radiation safety related activities and items;
- Performs cross-functional and/or other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.
- Works in compliance of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and its regulations, reporting hazards, deficiencies and contravention’s of the Act, in a timely manner.
Qualifications
- At a minimum, Bachelor of Science in a relevant scientific discipline (i.e. Health & Radiation Physics, Medical Physics, Radiation Biology) from a recognized institution, or recognized equivalent program in a relevant imaging discipline (i.e. Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Therapy)
- Minimum two (2) years of recent, related professional operational radiation safety experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
- Previous experience as a NEW (Nuclear Energy Worker) or x-ray work an asset
- Nuclear Medicine or Radiation Therapy related education an asset.
- Knowledge of the Nuclear Safety and Control Act and regulations, Transportation of Dangerous Goods Acts and its regulations
- Experience working in healthcare and a teaching hospital environment an asset
- Experience with teaching and training of staff preferred
- Ability to pay critical attention to detail to facilitate accuracy and completeness in the work process required
- Excellent interpersonal, report writing and communication skills
- Excellent problem recognition and problem-solving skills
- Effective organizational and time management skills
- Demonstrated commitment to continuing education
- Proficiency with Excel, PowerPoint and Word and database applications
- Ontario x-ray safety regulations an asset
