Position Overview The Director of Engineering will play a central leadership role guiding a team of experienced engineers in support of a new large international nuclear project. This role is responsible for overseeing engineering design deliverables, ensuring compliance with specifications, regulations, and project timelines, and providing expert review of design changes and technical issues.

You will work closely with international partners including Design authority, EPC Contractor, the European Union Owner team, and regulatory bodies, fostering collaboration and ensuring alignment across all engineering activities.

Location: This Position Is Structured In Two Phases

  • Phase 1 (Now – End of 2026): Remote, can be based anywhere in the Canada, with visits to Owner’s site
  • Phase 2 (End of 2026 – 2029): Transition to a 3-year expatriate assignment within the European Union.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engineering & Design Leadership
  • Lead the review and oversight of Gen III + PWR reactor design deliverables to ensure compliance with specifications, regulatory requirements, and safety standards.
  • Champion design excellence by driving optimization, constructability, and technical innovation.
  • Establish and maintain a robust design control and interface management system to ensure traceability and integration across disciplines.
  • Identify and proactively address high-risk design areas, ensuring potential issues are mitigated early.
  • Project Execution & Technical Oversight
  • Lead the Owner’s technical oversight of engineering contracts, including providing input data, reviewing deliverables, and resolving technical queries.
  • Ensure designs meet stringent quality, safety, and regulatory standards.
  • Provide timely assessments of design changes, deviations, and contractor deliverables to safeguard project integrity.
  • Oversee third-party engineering service providers, ensuring alignment with project scope, standards, and schedules.
  • Interface & Stakeholder Management
  • Serve as a central point of contact for coordination between engineering, construction, and commissioning teams.
  • Lead resolution of technical issues impacting construction and commissioning readiness.
  • Build strong working relationships with OEM, E&C (EPC contractor), regulatory bodies, and the Owner team.
  • Represent the Owner’s interests in negotiations, interface meetings, and regulatory reviews with clarity and professionalism.
  • Procurement & Contracting Support
  • Partner with Contracts and Procurement teams to prepare and review technical documentation for tendering and contract awards.
  • Provide technical expertise in evaluating bids, supplier qualifications, and scope definition for design, equipment, and construction packages.
  • Reporting, Risk & Assurance
  • Deliver regular updates to the Owner on engineering progress, risks, and readiness for commissioning.
  • Proactively flag emerging risks, nonconformances, or delays, and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Contribute to project risk reviews, ensuring engineering risks are clearly captured and managed within the overall project risk register.
  • Leadership, Safety & Culture
  • Lead and mentor a team of engineering discipline managers, promoting collaboration, accountability, and professional growth.
  • Embed a culture of nuclear safety, quality, and continuous improvement across all engineering activities.
  • Demonstrate integrity and professionalism in all interactions, fostering trust with consortium partners and regulatory authorities.

Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Nuclear Engineering.
  • 15+ years of experience in nuclear power engineering, including new build, operations, or modifications.
  • Direct experience with new build Gen III + PWR reactor design or equivalent Generation III+ technologies.
  • Demonstrated leadership of multi-disciplinary engineering teams in a regulated nuclear environment.
  • Knowledge of IAEA safety standards, INPO/WANO standards, and applicable codes (ASME, ANSI, NQA-1).
  • Strong project management expertise (PMI or equivalent certification preferred).
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Willingness and ability to relocate internationally for a 3-year assignment within the European Union.

Preferred

  • Experience in an Owner’s Engineer role or regulatory-facing engineering function.
  • Familiarity with EU nuclear safety regulations.
  • Commissioning and operations experience in nuclear power plants.
  • Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) license is an asset.

The base salary offered is based on local job market factors and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits.
