The opportunity:

The University of Manitoba is looking for an Academic Advisor. This position provides comprehensive advising and administrative support for both undergraduate and graduate programs, including Environmental Design, professionally accredited master's degrees, and the PhD in Design and Planning. They use advanced knowledge of academic policies and degree requirements to guide students through complex decisions, ensuring academic success and timely graduation. The role involves close collaboration with faculty and administrative units, managing tasks such as registration, progress tracking, graduation planning, and curriculum updates. The Advisor also contributes to process improvements and initiatives that enhance student engagement and program delivery.

The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:

  • Undergraduate degree in a related discipline required.
  • A degree in Environmental Design is preferred.
  • At least two years of directly related academic advising experience required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of theory relevant to academic advising is required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the characteristics, needs and experiences of students is required.
  • Demonstrate adequate understanding of the complexity of elements important to members of another culture in relation to history, values, religion, politics, communication styles, economy, or beliefs is required.
  • Experience administering accredited degree programs preferred.
  • A thorough knowledge of student services offered at the Fort Garry campus is preferred.
  • Knowledge of University of Manitoba policies, procedures and academic regulations related to graduate and undergraduate programs. - Experience working with UM Systems such as Aurora, INB, Astra, and Banner preferred.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, tact, judgement, and diplomacy with empathetic manner are required.
  • Must possess a high degree of integrity, professionalism, and sensitivity.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of both undergraduate & graduate administration.
  • Must have excellent knowledge and skills in Office 365, spreadsheet and data management.
  • Strong problem solving skills required.
  • Knowledge of University of Manitoba Policies and Procedures and ability to translate processes to ensure policies and procedures are followed.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to plan, prioritize workload, with accuracy and attention to detail are required.
  • Ability to employ culturally inclusive active listening techniques is required.
  • Ability to provide advice using sound judgement is required.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information is required.
  • Ability to work independently is required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various levels of internal and external contacts required.
  • Ability to support students to build skills related to social connection, resilience, coping, personal capacity for health and other dimensions of well-being is required.
  • Ability to identify when and with whom to implement appropriate crisis management and intervention responses is required.
  • Ability to use inclusive, respectful language in all communication is required.
  • Must be willing to work as a collaborative member of the student services team.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
