Reporting to the Director, Advancement Marketing, we are seeking an energetic Marketing Specialist who has excellent communication and collaboration skills, as well as strong analytical and problem solving capabilities. As a Marketing Specialist, you will be part of a team of marketing professionals whose responsibility it is to support seamless delivery of marketing campaigns that drive the university’s brand and business priorities, with a dedicated focus on alumni social media, digital newsletter marketing, and alumni special events.
The Marketing Specialist has the primary responsibility of assisting the internal marketing and communication teams on executing the University of Alberta’s marketing strategic plan. In addition, the specialist will be responsible for building, executing and delivering marketing/communication services to our internal partners, and be accountable for project management, from planning through to execution, including workflow, budget management, and reporting.
The Marketing Specialist leads the end-to-end execution of the alumni digital newsletter and social media strategy to drive high-impact engagement and community growth. This role manages day-to-day marketing activities as a client service point of contact for Alumni Relations, creating integrated marketing plans and reporting for local, regional, and special alumni events. Other key components of this position include creating consumer insights, monitoring trends, creating work plans, and developing integrated campaigns to improve market results.
The Marketing team delivers brand stewardship and marketing activities to strengthen the university brand by heightening awareness and visibility of the university and its story in local, national and international markets and building a comprehensive university reputation upon which recruitment, fundraising and partnerships, among other university objectives, can grow.
Marketing Planning
- In collaboration with the Marketing Director and Strategist, create integrated marketing plans that meet the university’s strategies while working directly with the Alumni Relations and Events team to drive alumni engagement.
- Gain a deep understanding of alumni-specific marketing channel requirements (especially social media and email marketing) to proactively anticipate client needs, identify solutions, and increase the value of service.
- Understand the role of different media options and their impact on achieving Alumni Relations marketing objectives, and oversee effective execution of tactical media and creative plans.
Marketing Execution
- Serve as a passionate lead for alumni social media channels, collaborating with an external vendor to develop high-impact content and creative strategies while overseeing the social calendar, community management, and regular performance reporting.
- Execute online and offline marketing initiatives, with a strong emphasis on digital newsletters, alumni event promotions, social media, and university websites.
- Collaborate with the content and creative services team on the production of tailored marketing and communication materials for the Alumni Relations portfolio.
Project Management
- Serve as a point of contact for Alumni Relations and External Relations.
- Have overall accountability for the end-to-end execution of Alumni Relations marketing projects (including the alumni newsletter and local/regional events) ensuring work is completed accurately, within agreed timelines and budget.
- Navigate through roadblocks by engaging key stakeholders and sponsors within Advancement and Alumni Relations.
Relationship Management

Build relationships with the internal agency, external suppliers, and social media vendors ensuring alumni projects are delivered on-time and on-budget.

Participate fully as a member of the external relations team, promoting service to the Alumni Relations business unit, supporting quality, innovation, and teamwork.

Interface with and contribute to cross-functional marketing teams to deliver all elements of alumni campaigns.

Provide clear and understandable advice and recommendations to support informed decision-making by Alumni Relations leaders.

Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing/Communications or a related field.

5+ years in professional marketing roles with an understanding of marketing strategy, ideally with experience in community building, higher education, or alumni relations.

Strong digital marketing technical skills, specifically in email marketing (newsletters), social media management, web content management, marketing automation, SEO, SEM, and Google Analytics.

Experience working in an internal marketing department and/or familiarity with agency-client service delivery models.

Experience managing and working in collaboration with creative teams and external vendors while demonstrating cross-functional influencing skills.

Superior attention to detail as well as excellent verbal and written communications skills.

A ‘‘hands-on’’ creative and dynamic approach to delivering project results with a focus on best practices.

Ability to manage multiple projects and demands at a time.
