About the role

The Senior Accountant reports to the Accounting Manager and is responsible for managing incoming payments, reconciling accounts, and maintaining accurate financial records. The Senior Accountant is also responsible for processing outgoing payments, managing vendor accounts, and ensuring timely and accurate disbursement of funds. This role supports departmental program managers by producing financial reports and ensures compliance with CHN financial policies.
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Process and record incoming payments, including honoraria and travel reimbursements.

  • Reconcile credit card statements and bank accounts.

  • Prepare and post entries to the general ledger and sub-ledgers.

  • Receive and verify purchase orders and supporting documentation.

  • Maintain organized and confidential filing systems for receivables and related documentation.

  • Generate monthly financial reports for the Accounting Manager and CFO to review and send to CHN Department Program Managers.

  • Assist with payroll functions including timesheet review, payroll processing and pay advice distribution.

  • Process all accounts payable transactions including data entry, cross-referencing purchase orders, and issuing payments via cheque or e-transfer.

  • Manage honoraria and travel claims for CHN Representatives, Hereditary Chiefs Council, and Executives.

  • Maintain confidential vendor and payroll files.

  • Reconcile Pacific Coastal Airlines accounts and other vendor statements.

  • Support the Accounting Manager with monthly reporting and documentation.

  • Submit monthly activity reports to the Accounting Manager.

  • Ensure secure handling of financial data and office equipment.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Grade 12 diploma with bookkeeping training or certification. A degree in accounting and/or Certified Aboriginal Finance Manager designation is preferred.

  • Minimum 40 WPM typing speed with high accuracy.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Adagio, and Paydirt Payroll.

  • Familiarity with office equipment and financial systems.

  • Strong understanding of filing systems and confidentiality protocols.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

  • Knowledge of Haida cultural values is an asset.
