COMMUNITY HOMES FOR CHILDREN - Direct Support Worker (Part-time)

New Directions is a social service agency offering a wide range of resources and services that foster people’s hopes and dreams in their communities**.**

Child Home Services (CHS) is one of the many programs offered by New Directions. This service area offers a range of home supports (i.e., family supports, foster home, group care homes, individualized homes, independent living, mentored living) to children, youth, and families who are dealing with challenges related to the experience of trauma and/or living with a disability. Our community-based resources are designed to support connection with family and community, a sense of belonging, and provide opportunities to engage in a meaningful life.

We are currently seeking Direct Support Workers for a specialized home that is designed to assist children and youth to develop life skills, social skills and/or access community resources. Individual care and guidance is provided to align with the needs of the child/youth to assist with mental health issues, behavioral challenges, or addictions. We provide stabilization through predictable structures, clear expectations and positive behavior support.

Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to):

  • Establish meaningful, caring, and respectful relationships with children, youth and their families
  • Serve as a positive role model for children and their families
  • Provide care in a community and residential setting
  • Provide medical, emotional, environmental, physical and behavioral support
  • Participate in programming to meet the individual goals of children and youth
  • Participate in various recreational and physical activities with children and youth
  • Cooking, house cleaning, yard work and other household maintenance duties
  • Provide assistance with personal care routines such as lifts, transfers, personal hygiene, and nutrition support
  • Complete all required documentation effectively

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Post-secondary education in the disability/social service sector is considered an asset
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience supporting individuals with autism, intellectual/developmental disabilities, anxiety, and self-injurious behaviour
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with the ability to operate a motor vehicle without supervision
  • This role is physically demanding. Health Care Aide training and experience is considered an asset
  • Ability to transfer knowledge and awareness into behaviors and expectations recognized as appropriate by members of identified cultures and by people with lived experience
  • The individuals in this home may display physical behaviors of concern, so it is important for staff to have a good understanding of the support plan and to communicate effectively as a team
  • Effective self-care strategies and ability to remain professional in stressful situations

The salary range for this Part-time (.5) position is $17.11 to $23.10 per hour, dependent upon education and/or experience.

The successful candidate will be subject to Criminal Record Check, Adult and Child Abuse Registry Check, Prior Contact Checks; and must supply a satisfactory driver’s safety rating.

These include everything from day programs to 24/7 staffed in-home settings for both adults and children. We also offer cultural and educational programs, job training, therapy, and clinical and counselling services.

We support children, teens, and adults in Winnipeg and Western Manitoba. Individuals may have an intellectual or physical disability. Or they may use American Sign Language to communicate.
