About the role

The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Part-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator.

For day-to-day responsibilities, the position will engage with the PhD Candidate and registered nurse in the team. The research assistant (RA) role will assist in the co-design and evaluation of an Indigenous diabetes peer support health promotion model of care. The position will offer an introduction to research activities but requires the individual to have strong communication skills, commitment to teamwork, learning and development, and willingness to accept new challenges and assignments.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Liaise with Indigenous community members, research participants, students, and researchers

  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with all research team members and Indigenous community members

  • Co-facilitate 7 virtual Community Reference Group (CRG) meetings

  • Assist with logistics of the Community Reference Group (CRG). This includes emails, creating calendar and Zoom invites, notetaking, and follow up emails as required.
    encourage and ensure all CRG members contribute to group discussions

  • Learn about and use framework analysis coding and analysis for qualitative research

  • Learn about community based participatory research and help the research team understand how they can improve this practice

  • Learn about referencing in academic writing and become versed in Endnote citation software

  • Learn about cultural protocol for Treaty 7 community engagement, among other areas, and contribute ways on how to improve this practice

  • Learn about ethics applications and assist with the ethics application for the final phase of the Indigenous diabetes peer support model proof-of-concept study

  • Develop presentation skills, as they feel comfortable, and assist the research team in communicating findings from the study to the public, other researchers, and health care providers

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • High school diploma
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities, particularly engaging with community members and/or Elders
  • Experience caring for type 2 diabetes (with self or others, does not need to be a formal role)
  • Excellent organization skills, including the ability to work independently and excellent attention to detail
  • High level of effective time management, personal initiative, and teamwork required
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including intercultural communication skills
  • Must be open to learning and development and be flexible and willing to accept new challenges and assignments
  • Comfortable with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Assets but not required:
    • Creativity. An interest in visual design and ways to communicate ideas are an asset
    • Background in community or patient engagement and service user involvement
    • Experience and knowledge of university research ethics procedures
    • Experience doing interviews or focus groups in a health research environment
    • Knowledge of both quantitative and qualitative research methods, and knowledge/experience working with Indigenous communities in ethical ways in research settings
    • Undergraduate in health-related field (i.e. nursing, health sciences) and/or plans for graduate school/medical school in health-related field and/or experience in health care setting or health research, including, but not limited to, any of the following areas: medical education, health-related social science research and population of public health
