Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.

Position Overview:

The English Department is hiring student editors for juice journal. juice is a literary journal put together, edited, and created by students enrolled at the University of Winnipeg. Three positions are available: Editor, Assistant Editor, and Editorial Assistant.

To be considered, applicants must include: a cover letter that clearly indicates the position(s) for which they would like to be considered, a cv, and an unofficial transcript.

Duties:

Key duties for each position include:

Editor (approx. 120 hours)

  • Solicits submissions for the journal and volunteers for the editorial board (posters, Instagram, emails to classes, alumni).
  • Manages editorial board + responds to contributors (acceptances and rejections).
  • Supervises the editing of submissions (may take on some editing if hours allow).
  • Solicits printing quotes from presses.
  • Organizes and hosts the journal launch.
  • Manages funds from journal sales

Assistant Editor (approx. 120 hours)

  • Supports Editor in a range of tasks as needed.
  • Helps supervise the editing of submissions (may take on some editing if hours allow).
  • Helps organize and host the journal launch.
  • Helps review and proofread galley if hours allow

Editorial Assistant (approx. 60 hours)

  • Provides administrative support to Editor and Assistant Editor.
  • Supports editorial board with edits (may take on some editing if hours allow).
  • Reviews and proofreads galley.
  • Helps with journal launch if budget allows.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a currently registered University of Winnipeg undergraduate student with first-year English plus other English literature and/or creative writing courses (declared major not required).
  • Preference will be given to qualified candidates who reflect the diversity of the University of Winnipeg community.
  • Must have excellent communication skills (both written and spoken) and strong editorial skills (punctuation and grammar).
  • Must have basic computer skills (email, word processing, scanning, social media).
  • Experience with desktop publishing programs Adobe, InDesign, and Photoshop 6.0 is an asset.
  • Prior experience on the juice editorial/volunteer board is an asset.
  • Must be reliable with a strong commitment to the goal of producing a quality journal on time.
  • Must be able to work on campus during the day time and during the week (M-F).
  • Must be able to see a project through from beginning to end, meeting deadlines along the way.

Condition(s) of Employment:

-Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

The period of work will be fromMarch 30, 2026 - December 4, 2026and the estimated total hours of work will be0-120 hours.
