RESEARCH ASSOCIATE - Reimagining Monitored Natural Attenuation as an Oil Spill Response Tool in the Arctic

This position is supported by funding from the above GENICE II project.

Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Principle Investigator, Dr. John Sinclair, the successful applicant will:

  • Conduct independent research investigating the relevant law and policy context, from international to local levels, exploring strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities in the policy and governance regime for Canadian Arctic marine spill prevention, preparation, and response.
  • Conduct independent research exploring the law and policy implications of the project's research findings, especially related to community-based monitoring and Monitored Natural Attenuation in spill preparation and response, including producing policy outputs (e.g., policy briefs, presentations) to relevant members of the policy community.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of constructive relationships with communities in the Kivalliq Region of Nunavut. This will include facilitating ongoing, two-way communication between the communities and the project.
  • Lead work with interested communities to co-develop specific research sub-projects that address local priorities related to hydrocarbon spill prevention, preparation, planning, and response, and coordinating/leading these projects with PIs and graduate students as appropriate.
  • Supervise and train graduate students involved in the research projects.
  • Facilitate knowledge transfer. This will include eliciting local information and priorities relevant to guiding the research and communicating this to project collaborators and PIs, and sharing research findings and implications with local communities and other stakeholders.
  • Publish findings in relevant journals and presenting at appropriate conferences.
  • Other duties as assigned, such as but are not limited to assisting in research proposal development, project coordination, and leading the development of necessary ethics protocols, research licences, and research agreements with communities or Inuit governance organizations as appropriate.

Qualifications:

Successful candidates must hold a doctoral degree or have equivalent qualifications and experience.

Minimum starting salary is $50,000 per annum, plus a full range of staff benefits.
