What You’ll Do

As a Geoscience Assessment Officer, you will have the opportunity to use your expertise to work as part of a team who functions as the corporate authority for geoscience and environmental risk assessments. We ensure that risks to the public and the environment are properly assessed, that appropriate mitigation measures are identified and implemented, and that sound principles are applied in the siting, design, construction, operation and decommissioning of nuclear facilities, in order to minimize impacts.

Reporting to the Director, you will:

  • assist in the conduct of technical assessments
  • participate in and assist with technical inspections
  • draft reports and other documentation for further review
  • assist with managing projects related to area of specialization
  • assist in supporting national and international program activities

Essential Qualifications:

Education:

Master’s degree in science or engineering from a recognized university, with relevant specialization in hydrology or water resources engineering or other related fields. An acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience may be considered.

Language Requirements:

English Essential

Experience:

  • Interpreting and analyzing hydrological and meteorological data for assessment purposes

  • Applying modelling and statistical techniques and tools for hydrologic and hydraulic assessments that include modelling and analyses related to surface water quantity and quality, hydrologic and climate change impacts, and hydrological and/or meteorological extremes.

  • Applying hydrologic and hydraulic theories and principles to applied and scientific research and/or to inform real-world design and decision-making

Knowledge of:

  • Theories and principles of surface water hydrology, including hydrologic and hydraulic modeling and analyses, flood hazard and risk assessment and statistical methods in hydrology

  • Surface water hydrology and meteorological monitoring programs and techniques, including national and international best practices

  • Knowledge of provincial, national and international best practices, guidance and standards, and recent developments in the field of hydrologic science and engineering

  • Climate change and its potential impacts on future hydrological and meteorological conditions as well as climate model projection data and its use or application

  • Knowledge and understanding of the CNSC’s mandate as well as the Canadian Nuclear Safety and Control Act, Regulations and supporting guidance documentation

Ability:

  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Synthesize technical information and explain complex regulatory issues to non-technical audiences.
  • Engage in consultations with stakeholders internal to and outside the CNSC
  • Deal with sensitive issues with diplomacy, tact and judgement

Asset Qualification:

  • Registered or eligible to register as a professional engineer (P. Eng) or professional geoscientist (P. Geo) in Canada
  • Experience in outreach/engagement activities
  • Collaborating and communicating with different stakeholders and partners
  • Experience in conducting inspections
  • Knowledge and experience in a related field such as climate change or meteorology.

Operational Needs:

All CNSC staff are subject to the Mobility Directive.
