Accommodation for disabilities per Ontario Human Rights Code

About the role

Reporting to the Director of Human Rights and Equity Initiatives within the Centre for Equity and Inclusion (CEI), the Incumbent serves as a senior advisor and consultant on matters related to operationalizing full accessibility and inclusion at Sheridan. The Incumbent creates and implements a multi-pronged accessibility and inclusion strategy that is aligned with legislative requirements, organizational goals, and CEI's mandate in order to shift culture, build awareness and sustain an accessible and inclusive, welcoming, and supportive environment for all students, employees and campus visitors, including people with disabilities.

The Incumbent collaborates with relevant areas of the institution to develop and implement a Sheridan-wide accessibility framework, which ensures all Sheridan goods, services and facilities, including academic and business initiatives, comply with Human Rights legislation and Accessibility Standards under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities, 2005 (AODA). The assessment and review of policies, practices and procedures (including Sheridan's delivery of goods, services and facilities) will be designed to identify, remove and prevent barriers, eliminate system discrimination, and foster equitable treatment. The Incumbent acts as a subject matter expert in the coordination and development of the mandated Sheridan Accessibility Policy, Multi-Year Accessibility plans, Status Reports, and other documents as required, in line with methods and timelines to ensure compliance with the Accessibility Standards under the AODA.

The incumbent addresses accessibility, equity and inclusion issues and feedback in cooperation with applicable areas at Sheridan. The incumbent may be called upon to participate in AODA audits, on-site inspections, and compliance reporting.

What You’ll be Doing

  • Enhancing and coordinating a Sheridan-wide accessibility planning and compliance framework to implement AODA requirements and ensure compliance with AODA legislation, in consultation with key partners.

  • Coordinating the development of appropriate resources, communications, training, education and awareness programs to support Sheridan’s AODA planning and compliance framework.

  • Leading initiatives to sustain an inclusive and welcoming work environment; conducting needs analyses, facilitating and overseeing the development of programs, plans, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines with respect to accessibility, equity and inclusion across Sheridan, including legislated requirements.

  • Engaging the Sheridan community in areas of accessibility, equity and inclusion; integrating the principles into Sheridan’s business objectives and culture.

  • Advising on requirements and methods of incorporating requirements into Sheridan’s strategic planning processes and budgets.

  • Ensuring organizational compliance with legislation (Human Rights Code, AODA) including as changes and additions are made by the relevant external agencies/providers; understands applicable laws, regulations and government requirements and their impact on the organization.

  • Developing, coordinating and facilitating educational awareness initiatives, relevant to maintaining a respectful and supportive workplace through accessibility, equity and inclusion initiatives. This includes employee participation, communication strategy, community relations, and the identification, prevention and removal of barriers.

  • Ensuring that the appropriate communication processes are in place to provide for the prompt and equitable resolution of AODA feedback and inquiries from Sheridan employees, students and the public.

  • Overseeing transactional metrics of the accessibility and inclusion portfolio area and contributing to the broader CEI metrics that measure progress on legislative requirements, organizational and CEI strategic priorities.

  • Providing advice and guidance and serving as a resource to various constituents; providing clients with tools, resources, skills and supports so they embed “Accessibility and Inclusion” in their areas (i.e. cultural shift so accessibility and inclusion is considered by all roles).

  • Providing a support function for the implementation of individual workplace accommodation plans for existing employees with disabilities who may require modifications to the built environment, the procurement of technology, assistive devices, equipment, software or other accommodations.

  • Providing support and consultation to the HR Talent Acquisition team in the assessment and implementation of accommodation requests for job applicants with disabilities and ensuring accessible employment practices are followed in the recruitment, assessment or selection processes.
