About the role

What you'll do

The Product Development team’s mandate is to help build the equity of CTR’s, FGL, and Sport Experts Retail Brands by improving the design and experience associated with our private-label branded offerings. The Product Development Manager is responsible for building processes and capabilities that help deliver a consistent, authentic, and customer-driven product experience through our Woods, Outbound, Huntshield, Yukon Gear, and Mckinley brands.

The Product Development Manager leads a highly motivated team that share an appreciation and passion for outdoor adventure. You are inspired by innovative design and recognize that style, performance, quality, and value, are all part of the winning equation to creating successful products. Guided by consumer centric insights and through collaboration with cross functional partners, you will help formulate product assortment strategies and guide your team from storytelling to stakeholders, concept creation, to production, for categories such as Backpacks, Lighting, Tents, Sleeping Bags and Camp Accessories.

  • Lead the product development team in creating innovative and value-driven products that meet our customers’ needs and market trends.
  • Develop and implement product strategies consistent with company vision.
  • Conduct market research to identify new opportunities and improvements for existing products suitable for our target customers across multiple banners.
  • Manage the entire product lifecycle from planning to execution and post-launch analysis.
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams including Brand, Merchandising, Quality, and our Pacific Rim Office to ensure timely and successful product launches.
  • Communicate to manufacturing partners and ensure they deliver to the design intent and quality expectations that your team has set forth.
  • Ensure all projects are engineered to meet or exceed cost targets and financial objectives.
  • Monitor product performance and gather feedback for continuous improvement.
  • Prepare and manage budgets for product development projects.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.

What you bring

  • Proactive interest in the outdoors, related equipment and our customers. Experience in the Outdoor Sporting Goods industry is an important asset.
  • Undergraduate degree in Industrial Design, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in product development, with at least 2 years in a managerial role.
  • Familiarity with common manufacturing techniques including cut-and-sew, screen printing, embroidery, injection and compression molding, high frequency welding, etc.
  • Proven track record of successfully managing the development and launch of products.
  • Exceptional project planning, organizational and time management skills and a high level of initiative and attention to detail.
  • Solid understanding of market research and data analysis methods.
  • Ability to think strategically, solve and communicate complex problems with data-driven thinking.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire and motivate a team.
  • Strong presentation/speaking skills – able to present and sell to all levels of the organization as well as the customer, communicating a clear and inspiring vision.
  • The ability to precisely communicate and negotiate time frames verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated collaboration, interpersonal influence, and teamwork skills (maintains effective communication and working relationships).
  • Team player – you like working with people and people like working with you; you do what needs to be done to strive for a common goal.
  • Results orientated while exhibiting great energy and resourcefulness.
  • A growth mindset, with inherent need to help others grow and learn.
  • Able to manage deadlines, be flexible with change, drive to timely resolutions.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally to trade shows for market research, and to various manufacturing partners to participate in onsite engineering builds.
