Piping Superintendent
With more than 35 years of experience, Edgewater Industrial Services is a rapidly growing, progressive company based in Haileybury, Ontario. Our comprehensive range of services encompasses installation, inspection, maintenance, and facility and equipment management in the Mining, Forestry and Oil and Gas industries. Edgewater Industrial employs Pipefitters, Electricians, Pressure Welders and Gas Fitters.
Location: Northern Ontario
Project: Industrial Refinery Project Site
Job Type: Full-Time / Project Assignment
Work Schedule/Shift Rotation: 14/7 rotation
Hours per Day: 10 hours per day (7:00 am to 5:30 pm - 1/2 hour unpaid lunch)
Travel/Accommodations/Meals: Provided
Position Summary
The Piping Superintendent is responsible for directing and supervising all piping construction activities, ensuring work is performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with project specifications, codes, and quality standards. This role requires strong experience with chemical process piping, corrosive services, cleanliness controls, and coordination within a hydrometallurgical processing environment.
Scope of Work
Installation of with New Processing Equipment and Systems:
-
Shop Fabrication of Piping Spools: Shop fabrication
-
Re-Enforced Fibreglass: Equipment installation and lamination of splice joints
-
Piping Installation: Various piping systems
-
Mechanical: Installation of mechanical equipment and pumps
-
Miscellaneous Small Installations: Additional scope
Key Responsibilities
Piping Construction and Execution:
Plan, coordinate, and supervise all piping installation activities, including:
-
Stainless steel, alloy, lined, and specialty chemical service piping
-
Acid, slurry, reagent, and process solution piping systems
-
Underground and aboveground piping networks
-
Pipe racks, supports, valves, and specialty equipment connections
-
CPVC, Carbon Steel (threaded, grooved and welded) and stainless steel welded
-
Testing and turn over of piping systems
Ensure installation complies with:
-
IFC drawings, piping isometrics, P&IDs, and specifications
-
Project-specific cleanliness and contamination control requirements
-
Applicable codes and standards (ASME, CSA, API, project specs)
-
Coordinate fabrication, installation, and tie-in sequencing to support construction and commissioning milestones
-
Resolve field design and constructability issues in collaboration with engineering and project management
Safety and Environmental Leadership:
-
Promote and enforce a strong safety culture in a chemical processing environment
-
Ensure compliance with:
-
Site safety programs and permits
-
Chemical handling, acid service, and corrosive materials procedures
-
Environmental protection and spill prevention requirements
-
Lead daily toolbox talks and Job Safety Analyses (JSAs)
-
Participate in incident investigations and corrective action implementation
Scheduling and Coordination:
Coordinate piping activities with:
Mechanical installation (tanks, reactors, filters, pumps)
-
Structural steel and pipe rack installation
-
Electrical and instrumentation teams
-
Subcontractors and vendors
-
Support short-interval planning and schedule tracking
-
Identify manpower, material, or equipment constraints and escalate early
Cost and Resource Management:
-
Manage labor productivity, equipment utilization, and materials to meet budget and schedule targets
-
Support field cost tracking, forecasting, and progress reporting
-
Review and approve timesheets, crew allocations, and equipment needs
Leadership and Communication:
-
Lead and mentor piping foremen, supervisors, and craft personnel
-
Maintain clear communication with:
-
Construction and project management
-
Engineering and QA/QC teams
-
Client and owner representatives
-
Provide regular progress updates and actively participate in coordination meetings
Qualifications and Experience
Required:
-
10+ years of experience in industrial piping construction
-
5+ years in a superintendent or senior supervisory role
-
Strong experience with:
-
Chemical process piping systems
-
Corrosion-resistant materials and chemical service
-
Hydrometallurgical or refinery-type facilities
-
Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, isometrics, and construction drawings
-
Proven leadership, planning, and problem-solving skills
Preferred:
-
Journeyperson Pipefitter or equivalent trade certification
-
Experience on battery materials, hydrometallurgy, or chemical refining projects
-
Familiarity with commissioning, system turnover, and operational readiness
-
Experience working under EPC or EPCM project structures
Certifications (Asset):
- First Aid / CPR
- Confined Space, Hot Work, and Chemical Handling training
- Working at Heights
- WHMIS
