How about working on some of the most challenging technology policy issues around, such as cross-jurisdictional law enforcement access, addressing emerging cyber threats, or data sovereignty? We are looking for a creative and driven Senior Manager, Corporate Affairs to join our Canadian government affairs and public policy team based in Ottawa.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Senior National Director, Corporate Affairs, the role engages with government policy makers, industry associations, customers, and civil society in Canada to promote Microsoft’s public policy goals. The successful candidate provides strategic leadership and business insight, aligns internal stakeholders, and builds relationships with government, industry, key public customers, academia and NGOs.

In partnership with both Canadian and global colleagues, the successful candidate will develop and execute outreach strategies and campaigns to positively shape the public policy debate and outcomes on public policy issues. The successful candidate will have an understanding of cybersecurity policy and digital areas such as artificial intelligence, digital skills, privacy, and public sector IT delivery.

They will work closely with the Microsoft business leadership and public sector teams in Canada to help progress company priorities, keep stakeholders engaged on public policy issues, debates and trends and providing proactive advice on the impact and relevance of these issues to the business.

  • Advocates for, and manages, policy issues and leads the company’s engagement and campaign with internal stakeholders related to government affairs on priority issues, strategies, and programs.
  • Contributes to, and develops, Microsoft’s policy agenda and advocacy strategies for top priorities.
  • Responds to key strategic issues and recommends well thought-out actions by prioritizing, ensuring alignment with stakeholder positions, leveraging specialists, or escalating matters.
  • Manages affairs in rapidly changing and ambiguous political, policy, and industry environments.
  • Develops strategies for multiple regulatory and legislative initiatives by serving as a subject matter expert on regulatory and legislative issues to assess their impact on Microsoft goals and objectives; delivers materials (e.g., strategy, policy briefings, other documentation) to internal stakeholders.

Subject Matter Expertise and Influence

  • Develops and implements strategies to advance Microsoft's public policy agenda through partnerships with external partners.
  • Develops and establishes an intelligence network, gathers and analyzes external/internal data and relationship interactions, and shares internal and external intelligence findings in support of Microsoft’s and customers' business objectives.
  • Provides counseling on public policy and geopolitical or cultural topics to business units related to specific product development or business plans.
  • Develops and recommends highly creative solutions for advancing Microsoft’s policy and political agenda, while managing risks and consequences.

Representing Microsoft

  • Represent Microsoft at internal and external events.
  • Supports executive engagement and participation in domestic or international events.
  • Directs political strategies and develops communication frameworks in partnership with Communications team.

External Relationships

  • Builds and maintains networks and coalition with governmental and non-governmental stakeholders, e.g., industry organizations, think tanks, academics, businesses, community leaders. Positions Microsoft as a trusted advisor to political leadership, trade and business associations and think tanks.
  • Serves as a strategic partner to the Public Sector and other key business leads by supporting sales and market opportunities, building Microsoft's reputation as a globally trusted provider of technology, and assisting in navigating, minimizing, or removing roadblocks in order to drive business results.

Internal Collaboration

  • Acts as a subject matter expert for critical projects. Provides support to teammates and cross-functional teams.
  • Leads projects across country and team lines.
  • Resolves cross-group conflicts and aligns teams to achieve shared business objectives. Facilitates internal business operations and communication within region.
  • Collaborates with, and influences, senior-level internal stakeholders and subject matter experts within and outside of Government Affairs to ensure a mutual understanding and alignment of objectives, priorities, and resources.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Public Policy, Public Administration, Political Science, Business Administration, Technology, Law, Liberal Arts, Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years work experience in government affairs, corporate affairs, public policy, government, or related area
    • OR equivalent experience
  • Experience with cybersecurity policy in digital areas.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 3+ years experience influencing, developing, or supporting public policy in areas such as cybersecurity, national security, and law enforcement.
  • Business level fluency in English and in French

Government Affairs IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across Canada is CAD $122,900 - CAD $219,100 per year.
