Job Summary:

Identify and resolve problems that develop during treatment or return-to-work programs.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Consults with Claims Entitlement Specialist and/or Case Manager, health care professionals, treatment centres, employers or workers, where problems develop with treatment or return to work programs. Identifies problem and resolves.
  2. Identifies need for clarification on issues of extent of WCB responsibility and consults with Claims Entitlement Specialist and/or Case Manager to provide clear instructions to treatment centre and all parties involved.
  3. In conjunction with Medical Health (Psychologist/ Physiotherapist), works to resolve difficulties arising in return to work programs by contacting employer, worker, Health Care Professional and treatment centre. May involve education, explanation, mediation and confrontation. May involve work site visitations.
  4. Resolves conflicts in medical opinion between Primary Care Providers and treatment centre. May involve discussion with Primary Care Providers, return to the treatment centre or referral to an assessment team.
  5. Meets with Health Care professionals and treatment centres throughout Saskatchewan to review treatment programs and identify and resolve concerns.
  6. Participates in departmental meetings to provide input to developing and monitoring programs and developing procedures and documentation.
  7. Educates Health Care professionals and treatment centres as to Workers’ Compensation Board requirements on procedures, reporting, etc.
  8. Serves as a resource for Claims Entitlement Specialist and/or Case Manager, Health Care professionals and treatment centers.

Qualification Requirements as per Job Evaluation:

A post-secondary degree in a health services field, and a minimum of one (1) years’ experience of having worked in a health care system (preferably Saskatchewan) as a licensed registered nurse, nurse practitioner, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, chiropractor or physician. Current license with the appropriate regulated profession preferred but not essential.

Over one (1) year successful experience demonstrating the ability to do the following:

  • Clinical knowledge as it applies to Functional Rehabilitation and Return to Work Programs.
  • Demonstrated case management skills, including problem identification and problem solving, and good medical interpretation skills.
  • Oral and written communication.
  • Mediation skills.
  • Conducting interviews.
  • Critical analysis skills.
  • Resolving conflicts on the basis of legislation, policy and department processes.
  • Organizing work schedules, prioritizing multiple work tasks and completing work within established time frames.
  • User knowledge of computer business applications such as Microsoft Office (Work, Excel and Outlook).

Willingness and ability to travel within the province and to work independently away from the office.

This position is a field position. As such, it is necessary for an individual to have a valid class 5 driver’s license to occupy the position.

Insurance

Workers’ compensation insurance is a provincial responsibility. Each Canadian province and territory has its own workers’ compensation legislation. All compensation systems are based on an historic compromise dating back 100 years. In that compromise, employers agree to cover the costs of workers’ compensation insurance and benefits, and in return receive protection from civil law suits when an injury occurs. In return for giving up their right to sue an employer if they were hurt on the job, workers receive a guarantee of benefits – including wage loss.

We operate like an insurance company. We protect registered employers from lawsuits when a workplace injury happens and we provide guaranteed benefits and programs to injured workers in industries covered by the Act. Our costs are funded entirely by premiums paid by employers in covered industries. The premiums are based on injury frequency and costs. Any injured worker in an industry covered by the Act can claim benefits and programs. Any employer in an industry covered by the Act must register with us and pay invoiced premiums.
