About the role

The Opportunity:

You’ll be part of our growing Air Quality and Greenhouse Gases team, using your skills as an Experienced Air Quality Field Consultant to conduct environmental studies for major projects in Ontario. You will monitor, assess, and report on ambient air quality in both urban and rural areas. Your job will be to establish, operate, and maintain ambient air monitoring equipment so that accurate assessments can be made with respect to the effects of the pollutants on humans and the environment. The projects you will support will be some of the most complex and innovative ones for our Earth & Environmental Team.

What you’ll do here:

  • Lead in the development of air quality monitoring and management plans.
  • Operate and calibrate monitoring equipment to measure air quality and show how it is distributed throughout the atmosphere.
  • Maintain, repair, and audit air quality and meteorological equipment.
  • Assess what type of sampling, measuring, and/or monitoring equipment will be used depending on what the pollutant is and its quantity and location.
  • Coordinate field programs for air quality monitoring.
  • Prepare field documentation relating to field activities, including data collection, analysis, and manipulation, and collaborate with our many counterparts in all our different disciplines at WSP and provide expertise and client deliverables on projects.
  • Ensure safety training has been completed and safety rules are followed.
  • Communicate both orally and through written reports results of studies, field experiments, or ongoing monitoring to clients, peers, supervisors, committee members, and the public.
  • You’ll be managing relationships with internal and external clients as you complete the field programs at our client sites, and ensure that their needs are understood and met, providing your guidance and expertise.
  • Ensure proper quality assurance/quality control procedures are performed on instrumentation, including maintenance and calibration.
  • Work with field scientists and technicians to complete field experiments and studies in air quality.
  • Identify opportunities to innovate in ambient air monitoring and implement new air monitoring technology.
  • You’ll have an ability to be resourceful, to innovate and solve technical challenges.
  • You’ll be part of a supportive teams with opportunities to grow.

What you'll bring to WSP...

  • 5+ year of related experience in ambient air monitoring.

  • Post-secondary education or experience in chemistry, electronics, instrumentation, environmental, atmospheric science, or similar technical field.

  • Experience with MECP and US EPA ambient air monitoring guidance and methods such as with high volume sampling, light scattering technology, and evacuated canisters.

  • You enjoy working outdoors, completing some fieldwork and like to work autonomously.

  • Training or aptitude with electronics and instrumentation and familiar and comfortable using standard hand tools relevant to the job.

  • Flexible, solution-oriented, self-motivated, and able to work independently or in a team environment.

  • Experience with the logistics of ordering and shipping equipment for project mobilization.

  • Ability to lift 30-50lb / 13-22kg of equipment or supplies on the job.

  • Experience mentoring, coaching, and managing staff.

  • You know your way around the MS Office suite of products.

  • You’ve got access to a vehicle and a clean Driver’s Abstract.
