The Resilience and Futures Strategist applies a resilience lens and futures toolkit to support The City in strengthening decisions, planning, policy and strategy. The position is responsible for building corporate and community capacity for strategic foresight, researching emerging stresses and shocks that could impact The City's ability to deliver services, and presenting and reporting on findings to enable the organization, businesses and communities to better anticipate, shape and respond to the future that is emerging. Primary Duties include:

  • Scan and research external environment, documents, data and analysis, and consult with subject matter experts to identify emerging signals and trends that could create risk or opportunity for Calgary.
  • Identify and evaluate opportunities to advance and strengthen the innovation ecosystem.
  • Leverage data and analytics to evaluate feasibility and probability of potential futures.
  • Identify and analyze opportunities to advance resilience and futures studies within The City of Calgary and broader Calgary communities.
  • Consult with internal clients to determine objectives, outcomes, outputs, timeline and required resources.
  • Track and manage project budgets while maximizing resources through cost sharing and partnership opportunities.
  • Design and facilitate workshops to explore assumptions and implications of emerging change, develop plausible scenarios, stress-test strategies against future scenarios and identify actions. Document and share findings.
  • Research approaches and create tools and resources to build futures thinking and resilience capacity. Create and deliver training on strategic foresight and futures to internal and external interest holders.
  • Design and document findings and scenarios into mediums for distribution, using methods for information design, visual communication, data and information synthesis to effectively engage with partners and present complex information in an easy-to-understand format.
  • Create "artifacts of the future" (representations of real-world objects or ideas, such as video, posters) to bring future ideas to life.
  • Develop and implement performance measures and program evaluation for resilience and futures projects and services and support reporting on the impact of the work.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Business Administration, Economics, Social Sciences, Information and Communications, Political Science, Information Management or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience using strategic foresight will be considered an asset.
  • Experience with report writing and project management will be considered an asset.
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills with the ability to influence others and build consensus.

Workstyle

  • This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees. These arrangements depend on the operational requirements of the role, employee suitability, and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.

**Days of work:**This position works a 5-day work week with one day off in a 3 week cycle.
