Compensation Range

In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

The Office of Student Academic Services at UBC Sauder is responsible for all aspects of the UBC Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) and Diploma in Accounting (DAP) program, and is the centre of academic advising and support services for BCom students.

The Student Engagement and Development Advisor is responsible for developing, delivering, and evaluating programs and services to support student learning and personal and professional development. In collaboration with students and university partners, the Student Engagement and Development Advisor supports new and continuing undergraduate, graduate + Diploma in Accounting students to become successful university learners, who are well prepared to engage in the university community and achieve their personal and career goals.

The Student Engagement and Development Advisor develops learning outcomes and objectives, facilitates curricular and co-curricular learning experiences, and advises departments within the UBC Sauder who are seeking to incorporate peer-supported learning and professional development into programs. The Student Engagement and Development Advisor advises student groups and organizations and supports student leadership broadly, including student-initiated projects. The Student Engagement and Development advisor facilitates areas of the student journey, such as orientation and transition, community, leadership, case competitions and awards.

Organizational Status

  • Reports to the Associate Director, Student Engagement and Development.

  • Works in collaboration with other team members, student engagement colleagues, student organizations and academic and student service departments and programs at UBC Sauder.

  • Takes on leadership roles in cross-functional team projects within the UBC Sauder’s Office of Student Academic Services (OSAS) and the Robert H. Lee (RHL) Graduate School.

  • Works cooperatively and strategically with other employees, students and faculty to ensure that common goals for the unit and the school are established and achieved.

  • Hires, trains, supervises and supports student employees and volunteers, provides significant leadership to student peer advisors and may supervise professional employees.

  • Assists with training of new advisors, coordinators and consultants within OSAS and the RHL Graduate School and other student service units within UBC Sauder.

Work Performed

  • Working with the Associate Director, Student Engagement and Development, provides input on the development and implementation of faculty-hosted student engagement and development programs for undergraduate, graduate + Diploma in Accounting students.
  • Leads and coordinates the delivery of student development programs and co-curricular experiences, activities and services for students. Programs include those developed in collaboration with the UBC Sauder departments and units, UBC Orientation, colleagues in the Student Development & Services Portfolio, the student societies within UBC Sauder, and student engagement colleagues on campus.
  • Develops, implements, and assesses orientation and transition programming and events that are accessible, inclusive and impactful for all students.
  • Participates in cross-campus committees related to student orientation and transition.
  • Creates and implements the mechanisms for students to participate in, lead and direct activities and events that enhance the student experience and sustain a sense of community among UBC Sauder students. Evaluates needs of students and provides recommendations.
  • Supports and enhances the development of student leadership by creating and implementing the mechanism for students to participate in, lead and direct programs for their peers. Focuses on supporting student leaders through advising, training, professional development and skill building opportunities. Works closely with student leaders to coach and assists them in program development and event planning.
  • Develops, implements and assesses student learning outcomes as part of program planning process;
  • Implements and manages processes for collecting student data and feedback.
  • Hires, trains and supervises student employees and volunteers for events; coordinates work schedules and training.
  • Supports students in crisis, either personal or academic, and advises students on available resources and makes appropriate referrals to personal support services on campus.
  • Liaises and collaborates with student engagement colleagues and units on campus while representing the views and perspectives of the faculty in a thoughtful and clear way.
  • Develops and manages budgets, and prepares budget reports for events and program-specific funding.
  • Supports award reviewing and adjudication.
  • Remains current in the literature and research in the field of student development.
  • Manages special projects assigned by the Associate Director, Student Engagement and Development and the Assistant Dean.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Decisions have an impact on the development of relationships both within the university and in external communities. Administration decisions directly affect the Office of Student Academic Services and the Robert H. Lee Graduate School’s ability to operate efficiently.
Poor decision-making or judgement directly affects the quality of student’s experience and may have negative impact on the school’s reputation and accountability with students, faculty and employees. Errors may have a serious negative effect on the office’s ability to carry out its program and service responsibilities. Poor management of employees or volunteers may lead to inefficiency, discontent or grievances. Inability to work cooperatively with students, employees and faculty will jeopardize the effective provision of services and programs to students. Poor performance would contribute to inefficient operations and low-quality service being provided by the Office of Student Academic Services and the Robert H. Lee Graduate School.

Supervision Received
Working under the general direction of the Associate Director, Student Engagement and Development, the Student Engagement and Development Advisor will exercise considerable judgment and innovation in developing and implementing programs and supporting student learning and success.

Supervision Given
May supervise staff, student employees and volunteers. Will be required to take responsibility for projects that are substantially carried out by others, including faculty, employees, and student volunteers who are not directly supervised by the Student Engagement and Development Advisor. Must work cooperatively with other staff, students and faculty to ensure that common goals are established and achieved.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three to four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Experience working in a post-secondary environment in project management or program development is preferred.
  • Knowledge of student development theories.
  • Experience designing and delivering educational workshops and managing large events.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, including evidence of ability to communicate well in a cross-cultural environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Must have excellent problem-solving skills, including the ability to plan ahead, anticipate programs and meet deadlines efficiently.
  • Ability to lead others and to function well within a team.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends is required. Must be able to accommodate flexible hours to attend events, deliver workshops, or provide training in evenings and on weekends.
  • Experience with excel, data reporting and management is an asset.
