Your Opportunity Under the general direction of the Supervisor, Technical Services, and working closely with faculty and the technical services team, the Teaching Lab and Field Coordinator provides support to facilitate teaching lab, experiential learning, and field research activities.

Your Responsibilities Will Include

  • Overseeing day-to-day operational needs for teaching labs, workshops, and field experiences related to courses
  • Preparing, assembling and setting-up material, equipment and supplies used in teaching labs
  • Liaising with course instructors to coordinate experiential learning to compliment theoretical material
  • Determining and implementing logistical details required for field trips and experiences
  • Maintaining inventory and preparing equipment used in field courses
  • Analyzing potential experiential learning opportunities to determine suitability with student academic learning objectives
  • Providing orientation to others on lab equipment, working procedures and practices; serving as a technical resource on laboratory protocols, and experimental procedures and equipment, including providing safety training and ensuring compliance to lab safety procedures and standards

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Earth Sciences, Geology, Physical Geography, or related field, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum three years of recent and related experience with teaching labs and field research in the geosciences.
  • Experience planning, setting up, and developing experiential learning activities such as teaching lab experiments.
  • Experience organizing and implementing logistical details for field trips and experiences.
  • Experience with basic minerals, rocks and fossils for help with organizing, maintaining and expanding teaching collections.
  • Excellent manual dexterity skills to efficiently, accurately and safely operate laboratory equipment.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft 365 (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), and online video/audio conferencing applications (e.g. Zoom, Microsoft Teams).
  • Strong communicator with excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Demonstrated strong analytical, organizational, and time-management skills.
  • Demonstrated strong service orientation and interpersonal skills.

Assets (Nonessential)

  • Knowledge of and experience with academic programs in the Department of Earth Sciences.
  • Knowledge of light microscopes.
  • Familiarity with geological maps and maintaining map collections for teaching (electronically and in person).
  • Driver’s license and first aid training.
