Gary Allan Learning Centres is seeking qualified applicants to supervise, teach, and evaluate self-identifying Indigenous students enrolled in a credit course. The course is being offered using a hybrid model, with in-class days at a summer school site, experiential education opportunities, and synchronous online learning. Please note that during synchronous learning days, the teacher may work off-site, within Ontario, subject to meeting the Board requirements for this and the completion of an attestation form.
Position Description:
The Secondary Teacher for Discovering the Workplace, would co-design and implement an Interdisciplinary course that integrates the exploration of career opportunities with essential workplace skills, offered by the Indigenous Rights and Education Department. The course is responsive to student interests and to assist high school students with exploring and gaining pathway exploration, mentoring and credit accumulation towards graduation.
The successful candidate will co-develop opportunities for Indigenous students across the system to gain experiences and opportunities through the department to support student achievement and increase graduation rates.
**First Nations, Métis and Inuit Studies qualifications are Preferred.**Previous experience in assisting students with pathway planning, involvement in Guidance and Careers, Special Education and Cooperative Education are preferred.
The Teacher for Discovering the Workplace will co-design, implement programs, and integrate system supports to meet the unique needs of Indigenous students and their families, with a focus on Indigenous rights, student achievement, well-being, and graduation.
The successful candidate will provide leadership with responsibilities that include but are not limited to the following:
Key responsibilities
- co-design and implement an Interdisciplinary Studies course option for Indigenous students
- Work in collaboration with the Indigenous Rights and Education team in developing responsive programming
- respond to individual and systemic barriers (e.g. academic, mental health, justice, cultural safety);
- identify and address individual barriers to engagement, learning and well-being;
- act as an advocate for self-identified Indigenous students in supporting student achievement
- support the system and schools in closing the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students in the areas of retention of students in school, graduation rates, and advancement to post secondary studies
- collaborate with the Indigenous Education team to develop and implement strategies that facilitate increased participation by Indigenous families, students, communities, and organizations in working to support academic achievement and well-being
- assist in coordinating regional events addressing the unique needs of Indigenous students
- collect and maintain accurate data and records to support student achievement
- develop student leadership skills
- communicate regularly with school administrators for timely interventions
- plan experiential learning opportunities, events and field trips
- arrange transportation and parental/guardian consent to participate in various learning opportunities and events
- ensure compliance with HDSB administrative procedures and policies
Qualifications and/or equivalent experience in the following areas would be assets:
- First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Histories and Current Realities AQs/Specialist is preferred
- Intermediate qualifications
- A minimum of 5 years' classroom experience
- Ability to motivate students to stay engaged and be responsive to student interests through asset based assessment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Possess strong organizational skills
- Well-developed interpersonal skills with a strong understanding of student vulnerabilities
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to safeguard and handle confidential information and adhere to HDSB's privacy and information management expectations
- Proficient in use g-tools and various presentation platforms
Knowledge of:
- Indigenous Rights and the Truth & Reconciliation Calls to Action;
- Historical and current realities of Indigenous Peoples in what is now known as Canada;
- Curriculum (Grade K - 8) and First Nations, Metis, and Inuit Studies Curriculum (9-12), as well as other curriculum areas for cross-curricular integration and synthesis;
- The diversity of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit histories, current realities, and contributions, and an awareness of the importance of Indigenous community treaty partnerships
- Knowledge and experience of working towards upholding Indigenous rights
- De-streaming processes in Ontario
