Overview
As an ambassador for Lakehead University and its Alumni Association, the Alumni & Community Engagement Officer is an integral member of the University Advancement Team. The Officer’s primary role focuses on strengthening relationships with alumni by creating meaningful opportunities for engagement with Lakehead University. In addition, the Officer will enhance the visibility and elevate the brand of Lakehead University in the community.
This position will implement the established objectives and strategies, as defined in the University Advancement 5 Year Plan (2026-2031) to maximize alumni through experiential, volunteer and philanthropic opportunities. Alumni are vital to the strength of Lakehead University acting as advocates, connections to community including job markets and through philanthropic support. This position connects alumni and the community to Lakehead’s mission.
Responsibilities
- Reporting to the Director, Alumni & Community Engagement, the Alumni & Community Engagement Officer is responsible for planning and executing alumni engagement activities on an annual basis. These activities include, but are not limited to, Homecoming, Convocation, Varsity Engagement and Reunions.
- This role will promote alumni awareness and active participation in alumni activities, encourage use of alumni affinity programs and services, and build a solid base of alumni volunteers.
- Serve as a staff liaison to the Alumni Association Board's Working Groups as required. Responsibilities include: coordinating meetings; taking minutes if required; and working with the chair to set agenda items and follow-up on action items. The Officer will provide regular updates to the Director.
- The Officer will ensure the successful staging of a bi-annual Lakehead Celebrates awards reception in Thunder Bay.
- The Officer will also provide support to Alumni Chapters in Thunder Bay and Calgary; Affinity Chapters such as Wrestling; and organize virtual engagement activities for all alumni and friends.
- The Officer will be the lead organizer for an annual community engagement event, such as Report to Community, that brings our alumni, donors, friends and partners onto the Lakehead University Thunder Bay Campus.
- The Officer will be responsible for the development and management of the Alumni Ambassador program, expanding Lakehead’s network of supporters across the country and around the world. Growth of this program is identified as a key deliverable in the University Advancement 5 Year Plan and will support the successful implementation of the University Strategic Plan – EvoLUtion.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary university degree in business or related field required.
- Post grad diploma in fundraising, philanthropy or not-for-profit management would be an asset
- Minimum of 2-3 years’ experience in event planning and execution
- Demonstrated experience using Customer Relationship Management systems, and a variety of word processing, spreadsheet and database experience is required
- Demonstrates strong relational skills
- Commitment to continuous learning and remaining current with industry trends with ability to apply new concepts
- Exhibits a high level of integrity
- Uses interpersonal skills demonstrating tact, patience, and courtesy
- Planning and implementation skills
- Interpersonal skills to work in a small office environment with a wide variety of stakeholders both internally and externally
- Strong organizational skills to manage competing priorities and complete projects.
- Strong phone skills – warm tone, good speaking cadence, clear and articulate speech
- Strong leadership skills to directly support and manage staff and volunteers.
