About the role

Job Description

What is the opportunity?

  • The Enterprise Chief Controls Office (ECCO) is a first line of defense group, newly centralized across the Enterprise with a Global Mandate to embed a culture of risk ownership and operational excellence by elevating the control environment and driving consistency and quality of risk practices to minimize loss and regulatory sanction, drive cost efficiencies, and accelerate execution to enable growth.
  • The Enterprise Control Testing (ECT) team serves as RBC’s central control testing function, acting on behalf of the 1LOD (first line of defense) Control Owner, and is responsible for performing control assurance activities in accordance with RBC’s Internal Controls Testing Policy and Standards (ICMP and ICMS).
  • The Director – Process, Automation and AI is accountable for ECT’s control testing process automation, AI tools and solutions, driving the strategic integration of technology to enhance the effectiveness, efficiency, cost and scalability of control assurance activities.

What will you do?
The Director – Process, Automation and AI will set and execute on ECT’s vision, strategy, approach, and will own the development and execution of the ECT improvement roadmap. They will have leadership of process improvement, process digitization and process automation utilizing select tools and AI capabilities in collaboration with internal partners and through the establishment, execution and oversight of a hybrid business and technology squad focused on these deliverables as well as through the establishment of a Lean Six Sigma (LSS) process improvement program. Key activities include:

  • Develop the vision, strategy, approach and execution for ECT’s: process standardization & improvement, process digitization and process automation & AI capabilities
  • Lead the establishment and execution of a Lean Six Sigma (LSS) process improvement program to develop and own the control testing processes and continuous improvement via process simplification, rationalization and automation
  • Own the development and execution of an ECT improvement roadmap to deliver on the strategic integration of technology and continuous process improvement to enhance the effectiveness, efficiency, cost and scalability of control assurance activities
  • Accountable for performance, maintenance and resiliency of tools & solutions implemented in collaboration with technology partners
  • Monitor and report on the impact of process improvements, process digitization and process automation, by developing KPIs such as error reduction, testing efficiency, control remediation timelines, and control tester productivity, levels of automation and resultant effort reductions, process and control test rationalization, to demonstrate value to senior leadership
  • Oversee a team of functional experts (process engineers or LSS practioners, digitization, automation and AI SMEs) in the delivery of the activities above, including building a strong culture, overseeing team performance and setting a clear direction for the team, promoting continuous learning and continuous improvement mindset to enable the team’s growth and advance the team’s capabilities

What do you need to succeed?
Must Have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Industrial Engineering with a focus on Automation & AI
  • Minimum 7 - 10 years work experience in relevant or complimentary capacities
  • Knowledge/experience in Process Engineering, Lean Six Sigma (LSS), Automation Toolsets in a back-office and operational environment, experience leading and implementing AI capabilities and solutions
  • Exceptional leadership skills with a proven ability to manage and inspire high-performing process transformation and automation technology squads as well as driving enterprise-wide automation or process improvement programs, in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills to influence senior leaders and align diverse teams on process transformation and automation programs & initiatives
  • Proficiency in agile project management methodologies and tools (e.g. JIRA) to oversee technology development and delivery
  • Deep knowledge of automation technologies and AI as well as common workflow management platforms (e.g. Pega, ServiceNow, Appian, Camunda, etc), particularly as they could apply to automated controls testing, preferably in the financial services industry

Nice to Have:

  • Masters degree in Computer Science and Industrial Engineering
  • Previous experience working in highly regulated business environments in the financial services sector; Knowledge and/or experience working across different platforms and/or functional units of a diversified financial services firm, including exposure to multiple geographies
