What is the opportunity?
Reporting to the Director, Environmental & Social Risk Management (ESRM), you will play a key role in the management and mitigation of environmental and social (E&S) risks at RBC. In this role you will work alongside other environmental and social professionals to provide advice and support to account managers across RBC’s lines of business, credit adjudicators and risk managers in Group Risk Management (GRM), and in some cases, current and prospective RBC clients. You will also assist in the implementation of RBC’s E&S risk policies and procedures, and as part of a team, work to keep RBC informed of emerging E&S issues that could lead to credit, reputational or legal risk.
Office-based role in either Montreal or Toronto.
What will you do?
- Advise business units and GRM colleagues on E&S risk issues that may represent credit, reputation, or regulatory risk to RBC.
- Evaluate E&S risk inherent in individual and/or syndicated credit transactions, and advise account and risk managers on structuring transactions to minimize E&S risk.
- Advise the business in relation to the Equator Principles and their applicability to project work, review and advise in relation to consultant and client E&S documentation prepared pursuant to the Equator Principles.
- Participate in Equator Principles Association meetings and committees on an ad hoc basis.
- Facilitate technical discussions with RBC clients and prospects on the management of E&S issues to help ensure stable financing and protect client interests.
- Support and maintain systems to measure, monitor, and report on E&S risk management across RBC’s businesses.
- Lead and/or assist with the implementation of RBC’s suite of E&S risk policies and practices in collaboration with RBC’s Business and Corporate Support Segments, including Corporate Environmental Affairs, Capital Markets, Commercial Banking, and other lines of business.
- Identify and recommend required updates to RBC’s suite of E&S risk policies.
- Facilitate effective communication by translating and interpreting technical documents and conversations between English and French.
What do you need to succeed?
Must-Haves:
- Bilingualism (English and French) required, as you will regularly serve our clients and do business with RBC partners and/or employees across Canada with English and French speaking needs.
- Graduate degree in science or engineering with a minimum of 10 years of related experience in environmental site assessment and/or risk assessment or E&S risk management experience
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Understanding of credit adjudication, banking and commercial lending
- Intellectual curiosity, global and strategic mindset with ability to think conceptually
Nice-to-Haves:
- Professional designation in science or engineering.
- Work experience relating to, and/or strong understanding of the Equator Principles
- Brownfield redevelopment experience
- Strong record of work experience in financial service industry with good exposure to operational processes, financial products, credit and/or risk management activities, effective risk management approaches and global risk issues
- Working knowledge of Environmental Impact Assessments, Biodiversity, and Social risk analysis
