InnoTech Alberta is seeking an innovative and collaborative Technologist to join its Energy Pilot Facilities & Operations team. This is a 14-month term position based in InnoTech Alberta’s Research Centre in Devon, AB with occasional travel to InnoTech Alberta’s facility in Edmonton, AB.

With a focus on supporting Alberta’s energy and manufacturing sectors, the Energy Pilot Facilities & Operations team works in collaboration with the Research and Development (R&D) teams within the Advanced Materials and Monitoring Division to de-risk and evaluate technologies and provide applied research solutions for industrial clients. The portfolio of services supported by the team is diverse and focuses on industry’s needs by assessing, characterizing, and validating durability of materials for industrial applications, evaluating and validating integrity management technologies, and assessing material corrosion phenomenon in field and simulated severe service and sour environments.

Here’s some more information about the position:

Reporting to the Devon Operations Manager, the Experienced Technologist will operate pilot-scale experimental facilities and support execution of industrial field trials for external client R&D programs related to assessment of advanced materials performance and asset integrity solutions for industrial pipeline applications. Specifically, the Experienced Technologist will act as operator for the team’s Pilot-Scale Slurry Flow Loop in execution of experiments to evaluate material durability and integrity management technologies under slurry and multiphase flow conditions. Moreover, the successful candidate will support execution of similar experiments on industrial client pipeline field sites including preparation and evaluation of field test specimens and performance of on-site integrity inspections. The Experienced Technologist will also support development and operation of new pilot-scale experimental apparatus for evaluation of pipeline material and integrity management technologies.

Specific responsibilities related to the position will include, but are not limited to, the following:

Technical

  • Operate, maintain, and calibrate pipeline pilot-scale experimental facilities and supporting equipment. Assist in design, construction, development and commissioning of new pipeline pilot-scale experimental apparatus.
  • Organize, conduct, and monitor experiments or portions of experiments using pipeline pilot-scale experimental facilities and through client industrial field trials.
  • Collect, compile, and document experimental data and observations in a systematic, detailed manner. Assist with interpretation and presentation of data and results of experiments.
  • Write interim reports and data summaries and contribute to final reports and presentations for external clients. Communicate procedures, processes, and results to internal and external clients.
  • Order, track, receive, and maintain supplies and equipment inventories for experimental projects.
  • Research new experimental procedures and methods and keep up to date with technical advances related to pipeline integrity management technology evaluations.
  • Support pilot plant facility management and logistics including movement of equipment, test specimens, and supplies using overhead crane and industrial forklift.

Project Management

  • Monitor and report task delivery progress and provide input and recommended changes to project schedule to project leader.
  • Assist in monitoring budget, expenses, and time allocations.
  • Review and assist in preparing project proposals and cost quotations.

Safety

  • Maintain lab organization and cleanliness (general housekeeping).
  • Handle, store, and dispose of chemical and waste materials.
  • Actively contributes to conducting hazard assessments, performing facility safety inspections, creating safe work procedures, and ensuring that the workplace remain free of safety hazards.

Qualifications and skills we are looking for:

Requirements:

  • Diploma in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering Technology
  • 5 years of related technical experience. Experience in an industrial or research environment would be considered an asset.
  • Possess a valid Class 5 Drivers License

Desired Skills and Abilities:

  • Comfortable working within an industrial setting and familiarity with industrial hazards and processes. Experience working with an overhead crane and forklift would be considered an asset.
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to understand equipment process flow (eg. P&ID interpretation)
  • Ability to perform hands-on work and physically demanding tasks in support of pilot-scale facility operation
  • Ability to take initiative and execute assigned tasks in a timely manner
  • Meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality results in a fast-paced environment with tight timelines
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team as well as independently
