About the role

The Role You need to have a live NMC UK pin in order to be considered for this post.

  • Specialist clinical practitioner providing care, expert advice and support, operating within the stroke service
  • The post holder will ensure a person-centred approach to care delivery which is safe and effective to ensure and maintain quality strategy
  • To contribute to the development and implementation of a programme of clinical audit and research activity
  • To contribute to and be part of the specialised stroke care, thrombolysis and thrombectomy team at a local level and across the thrombectomy ‘Hub and Spoke’ network

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

  • An exciting and rarely available opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Stroke Clinical Nurse Specialist within Stroke Services in South Sector, based at Queen Elizabeth University Campus
  • The shift pattern for this post is Monday to Friday

Key Responsibilities Clinical Leadership :

  • Participate in planning, priority setting and decision making to ensure that patients’ needs are met throughout their stroke journey
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of guidelines, policies and procedures
  • Provide encouragement and motivation to the nursing team acting in an advocacy role to ensure person centred care remains the focus of all care delivery across the stroke pathway
  • Demonstrate the ability to function competently as a member of the multi-disciplinary team, understanding and acknowledging the role and function of other members of the team
  • Participate in the Scottish Stroke Care Audit data collection and utilising the data to improve practice
  • Contribute to the research agenda locally to facilitate further development of the service
  • Develop, maintain and participate in the delivery of a structured education and training programmes for nursing staff, to enhance nursing knowledge and skills in relation to specialty
  • Contribute to the identification of areas of service deficit making recommendations for future review and redesign of services in conjunction with the Senior Nurse/Service Managers and multi-disciplinary team
  • Be fully conversant with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and other relevant guidance documents, which support and maintain standards of professional practice for nurses and midwives

Clinical

  • Undertake expert clinical nursing practice
  • Be part of the specialised thrombolysis and thrombectomy team in the assessment, treatment and post interventional monitoring
  • Provide education and coaching to the stroke community on all aspects of the stroke care pathway utilising the education tools available
  • Provide a focal point of nursing expertise for NHSGGC staff, patients and their carers in the absence of a Lead Nurse
  • Provide support and counselling for patients with newly diagnosed or ongoing disease, supporting patients who are undergoing investigation, treatment or maintenance of condition.
  • Develop and supervise the clinical practice of other nurses within area of specialism
  • Provide specialist support to the ambulance crew while the patient is in transit, if working in a spoke hospital
  • Provide specialist nursing assessment, implementation and evaluation of care, which may include symptom control, discharge planning and home care support as well as support in the emergency stroke care pathway

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

  • Registered Nurse with valid NMC Registration
  • Educated to/working towards/operating at Degree Level
  • Post graduate expertise within speciality / area of practice that demonstrates the required breadth of knowledge required to lead safety, effectively and efficiently
  • Comprehensive knowledge of clinical guidelines and standards within the speciality / area of practice
  • Specialist knowledge and experience of relevant conditions, pathology, policies and procedures associated with the speciality/area of practice ensuring that the level of expertise can be utilised to deliver leadership within speciality / area of practice
  • Leadership skills to enable the day to day management of service delivery
  • Further education/evidence of Continuous Professional Development in area of speciality including study days/courses/post graduate qualification
  • The post holder will possess excellent team-working/leadership skills and have the ability to motivate others and work using own initiative
  • Excellent listening, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Effective time management skills
  • Working knowledge of basic information technology

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part-time working hours will be reduced on a pro-rata basis.
