Job Profile
There is an opening for a Landscaper position within the Infrastructure Services - Operations Division available immediately. Reporting to the Supervisor of Horticulture, the following requirements apply.
What you will be doing
-
- Perform horticultural duties such as planting, maintaining, mulching and pruning of annual, perennial and shrub beds to enhance horticultural areas within parks, road allowance & traffic medians throughout the City of Cambridge.
- Demonstrate a sound understanding of the safe and efficient use and basic maintenance of all job-related tools and equipment including line trimmers, rototillers, brush chippers, agricultural/ sidewalk tractors, loader, trailer, snow blowers, chainsaws, rotary mowers, leaf blowers, sod cutters, rakes, shovels etc.
- Perform watering duties in city gardens and other floral features.
- Assist in greenhouse related tasks for the maintenance of various horticultural crops in the city greenhouse facility.
- Assist with monitoring and determining the necessary growing conditions and control of all plant pests.
- Perform snow removal/ de-icing activities utilizing both machine and hand tools where required.
- Cleanup of debris & litter including emptying of garbage and recycling receptacles included operating the refuse packer, when needed
- Interpret, update assets and reports in using assigned computing equipment.
- Grass cutting, vegetation control, maintenance and landscaping on boulevards, parks, trails, trail heads, city owned lands and facilities as scheduled or as-required. Minor repairs and maintenance to city owned assets, such as signs/ p-gates/ bollards etc.
- Monitor and maintain outdoor spaces on city owned properties
- Determine appropriate traffic control and setup/ breakdown according to Book 7 of the Ontario Traffic Manual when working in the right-of-way.
- Operate required equipment required in the performance of position.
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions - including rain, snow cold and hot conditions with appropriate PPE.
- Model Corporate Values of Respect, integrity, inclusiveness and service
- Other duties as assigned related to the general duties and scope of this role.
Minimum Requirements
-
A minimum of 12 to 18 months of landscaping, horticultural, turf management experience performing duties related to the above-mentioned responsibilities is preferred.

Good understanding and knowledge on a wide range of horticultural and grounds maintenance skills including, but not limited to tropical, annual, perennial, shrub and tree species.

Computer skills to support use of laptops/tablets in tracking/delivery of daily work activities, accessing mapping resources (GIS Software) and work order system. Be required to access, respond and generate service requests and work orders to track and manage daily work activities.

A valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence in good standing, with a driver’s abstract acceptable to the City (4 or less demerit points may be considered acceptable).

Legally entitled to work in Canada

Must be physically capable of performing required duties, including must be able to lift, push or pull up to 23kgs and occasionally up to 35kgs
-
Must be familiar with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the regulations that apply to the position and the related work activities (including working in the public right of way). Relevant training will be provided as required to support the defined duties of the position.
Your compensation
This position is within the outside workers union Salary Schedule Grade 3 and has an hourly range (2025 Rates) of:
Starting Rate: $30.50
12 Month Rate: $31.46
24 Month Rate: $32.40
Comprehensive Benefits Package including Health Care, Dental, Travel Etc. along with the Ontario Municipal Employee Retirement System (OMERS) is included.
Education
-
High School Diploma plus additional program/course(s) in landscaping, horticulture, turf management or related discipline of up to six months or equivalent.

A college diploma in landscaping, horticulture, turf management or a related discipline is considered an asset.
