Description
Located out at the Heartland Petrochemical Complex (HPC) in Fort Saskatchewan, the Senior Specialist, Control Systems, will report to the Manager, Controls & Automation, within the HPC Technical Services team. The Senior Specialist, Control Systems is an experienced subject matter expert, with responsibility for technical aspects of the process control systems for all facilities at HPC.
Key Activities and Responsibilities
- Become familiar with the Central Utilities facilities, as well as an understanding of any control requirements for the licensed technologies (UOP Oleflex, Grace Unipol) to help support the other two main areas of the facility.
- Develop and approve preventative maintenance timing and scope of work for the control systems in collaboration with OT, PLC, and DCS personnel.
- Support the development of data collection and monitoring systems for reliable operation of the facility (Plant Historian, DCS Historian).
- Support the Commissioning Team on aspects related to process control systems.
- Familiarity with Management of Changes (MOC) processes, safety best practices, and performing work on live plants.
- Support Operations and Maintenance with any PLC/DCS/Controls day-to-day operational or maintenance issues.
- Analyze, troubleshoot, and solve control problems, work with third party interfaces like AMS.
- Support investigations into controls failures or controls issues and complete reports and recommendations on preventative measures.
- Provide second-tier support for SIS testing/documentation/calculations/verification
- Support the Alarm Management plan, review and stamp Automation MOC as required
- Interface with engineering, service, and vendor companies on controls issues and obtain required information to support the issues at hand and for lifecycle planning & obsolescence of control systems hardware/software.
- Be the support contact on high level Automation issues. Assist and provide guidance as appropriate for the issues.
- Complete control tasks as assigned in support of the overall operation of the plant. Communication with Operations for Scheduling/Implementation/Testing of Control Schemes.
- Lead and coordinate larger automation projects, system upgrades, and turn around activities.
- Support the development and modifications to PLC/DCS control graphics as required.
- Support Backup & Recovery plans, support Cybersecurity Initiatives
- Design/Implementation/Testing of Control Strategies using IEC-61131 Programming Languages and HMI Configuration.
Education, Skills and Experience
- Have 8 or more years of industry-related experience in the field of process control systems
- 3+ years of PLC experience. Siemens experience is a must.
- 3+ years of DCS experience, Emerson DeltaV preferred
- 2+ years of Communication Protocols experience (i.e. Modbus, HART, etc.)
- Familiarity with Virtualization Computing.
- Candidate will have experience with large scale integrated facilities
- Requires an Instrumentation/Electrical Technologist Diploma
- Preferred candidate will have experience in commissioning and start-up of new equipment as well as experience with DCS/PLC equipment and system maintenance to facilities in sustained operating phases.
- Preference will be given to candidates with SIF verification experience
- Preference will be given to candidates with previous petrochemical experience
As this position is identified as safety and security sensitive, employment of a final candidate will be conditional upon completion of pre-employment medical, drivers abstract, drug & alcohol and criminal background check assessments with satisfactory results.
